Worth More Than Gold

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” -1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV

Worth More Than Gold

These days, it's not unusual to flip through a magazine and see some sort of body shaming. It's not unusual to see a "Who Wore It Best?" or a “Hot or Not" section. Society is obsessed with weight and beauty and the latest trends, and I think that puts a lot of pressure on young women. Society tells young women that they are supposed to be skinny and pretty, but society wants women to be its definition of skinny and pretty.

What happens when a young woman doesn't live up to society's expectations? A lot of times, a young woman's self worth is defined by society. Society says a lot of things about young women, but what does God say?

God says you are loved.

John 3:16 NIV says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." God loves each and every one of us so much, so unconditionally, that He gave His only son to die so that we can have a relationship with Him and spend forever in His presence.

God says you are beautiful.

1 Peter 3:3-4 NIV says “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." Of course, there is nothing wrong with braided hair and wearing gold jewelry and fine clothes, but your outward appearance is not what makes you beautiful in God's eyes. The Lord looks at the Heart (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV), so make your heart, beautiful because beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

God says you are one of a kind.

Psalm 139:13-14 NIV says “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." You are fearfully and wonderfully made. God made you, and you are the only one like you. You are one of a kind. God knows everything about you and made you the unique, beautiful, wonderful person that you are.

Instead of letting society define us, we should let God define us. Society places definitions and labels on us, but God has already labeled us. We are more than what society says about us. We are loved. We are beautiful. We are one of a kind. And we are worth more than gold.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
