Something that has always been able to get under my skin is millennial bashing. I take Millennial bashing personally because I'm at the tail end of an age group that ranges from today's teens to people in their late twenties or early thirties.
A common stereotype of a Millennial is a young adult who knows nothing about politics, but posts their watered down opinions all over social media, don't believe in spanking kids, the playlist on their phone consists of The Top 40 or Fetty Wap's newest album, addicted to their phones, their favorite topic is themselves, and they've probably never seen "Caddy Shack."
If you need a reference, Kylie Jenner.
People will try to generalize Millennials with the following adjectives: Lazy, entitled, stupid, clueless, selfish, vain, misinformed, rude, conceited, whiny, disrespectful, reckless and uneducated.
I cannot stand being grouped into that category.
Recently what has had my blood boiling about this topic is when I tried to have an intellectual, political conversation with someone.
I explained that I planned on voting third party because I would not be able to attach my name and give support to either of the Democratic or Republican nominees because they both have views I do not agree with, and I was troubled by both nominees past's.
The person I was speaking to, was older and a non-millennial, decided to poke the issue further to start an argument with me, and asked "Gun to your head: Hilary or Trump." To which I responded that I would not be able to choose because I wouldn't be able to get myself to pick either.
The person I was talking to then said, verbatim, "That's the issue with you young Millennials. If you guys actually knew politics, the choice would be easy."
One: I'm literally a Political Science major. I'm paying over thirty-thousand dollars a year to have a degree in Politics.
Two: Do not use my age to discredit me. It's tacky, and just a low blow.
I cannot stand when someone tries to use how young I am to try to invalidate me as a person somehow.
A friend of mine, who is ten years older than me, once introduced me to someone by stating my name then proceeding to tell them I just graduated high school the year before. Because by stating my age that will somehow change the dynamic of our conversation.
I don't know why bashing on Millennials has become some sort of trend, but it's a trend that I'd like for it to die.
You can tell me that I'm young and I don't know everything until you're blue, but it won't change a thing.
As a Millennial, I know I don't know everything, but I'm in my fifteenth year of formal schooling so I feel already know quite a bit.
You can generalize me as some dumb, misinformed Millennial that thinks the world owes them something, but that just makes you too lazy to actually get to know me and find a real reason to dislike me.
