It's Yeezy season. To celebrate, I picked out a couple of luxury sneakers that have caught my eyes recently.
For those who aren't familiar with the phrase, "Yeezy season" refers to the release of the highly demanded sneakers called "Yeezys" designed by Kanye West. Recently, West collaborated with Adidas to produce Yeezy Boost 350, pictured below.
Prior to the 350's, Adidas produced Yeezy Boost 750 which is pictured below.
West has also collaborated with Nike to create Nike Air Yeezy 1 and 2, which are also pictured below (respectively).
These sneakers are rare and are "grails" (shoes sneakerheads want for their collection) for many collectors. Their release is highly limited and purchasing them is very difficult due to their limited nature and bots (programs people use to quickly purchase limited releases). Resale prices on these sneakers are absurd, certain pairs hovering around $5,000.
Next is my personal favorite: Saint Laurent Paris SL/10H.
These are designed by the French luxury brand, Yves Saint Laurent (also known as SLP). The SL/10H are inspired by the silhouette of the renowned Jordans, but with their own spin to it. Their colorways and silhouette are reminiscent of the Jordan 1 "Breds" and "Royals" (pictured below) which are the most iconic colorways of the Jordan brand. The SL/10H are hover around $400-600 and often go on sale for affordable prices. It's a pretty hefty price tag for a pair of shoes, the leather quality and attention to detail makes the price worth it.
Next is my least favorite: Rick Owens Geobaskets.
Everyone has a pair of shoes that they don't understand, and this is one of them for me. These look like a pair of Converses that a clown would wear, but that is just my opinion. Designer Rick Owens has produced many sneakers with very unique aesthetics, such as Ramones and Tech Runners. Retail price for these Geobaskets hover around $1,000. If you can rock them, that's nice, but I haven't seen one person pull these off successfully.
There are many more luxury brands that I haven't mentioned, such as Maison Martin Margiela (MMM), Balenciaga, Common Projects, and the list goes on. Often the absurd price of these luxury sneakers is the price of the brand name itself. The brand name alone can make a pair of sneakers "hyped" and have people camping outside the store for hours. However, just like all things, name value isn't everything. The cohesiveness of the sneakers to the rest of the outfit is much more important than the brand name.
I say all these things about "cohesiveness" and "just a brand name," but maybe I'm just salty because I'm a broke college student, saddened by all the Yeezy pickups that flood my newsfeed.
