Buzzfeed is well known for writing articles that can inspire, anger, or challenge their readers. With all of the different sections of Buzzfeed there is something for everyone to enjoy.
I recently ran upon an article titled, 23 Not-Overwhelming Ways to Workout When You're Depressed". You can also find it here. The author, Anna Borges, is my hero for this week. I can personally attest to the fact that I am an absolute wreck when I'm not physically exerting myself.
Many people know that when I graduated high school I was battling myself every day. Getting out of bed was hard, laughing and joking was hard. Life itself was hard for me. I had no idea what I was doing or what my future held. Basically I had no drive to accomplish anything for myself. Not too long after that I met Misty and Caitlyn, who served as my personal coaches if you will. Caitlyn absolutely kicked my butt in the gym and actually taught me how not to be afraid of the free weights and lifting heavy. I dropped 45 pounds and had the confidence I had always dreamed of. I was wearing size 10 jeans and small or medium tops. Depression had become a thing of my past.
Granted, if you saw me today my size 16 jeans might surprise you, however, I am happy. I began to really gain my weight back when my step dad became (basically terminally) ill last October. By December I had gained about 65 pounds back. It has been a very hard daily struggle to look in the mirror daily and see the girl that I was in high school (plus some). I felt my depression and anxiety creeping back in. It was affecting my relationships both at home and at work. So when I found this article, I knew it was time for me to get back to it.
I have signed up for a couple of local 5K marathons and have started back at the gym and cutting sodas and fast food. In the one week since I have started I can tell my energy coming back. I wake up early every morning and I have gotten more compliments from my customers than I have since I first started. My acne is even starting to go back to being minimal.
As for my usual blog reviews, I would like to highlight some of my favorite points of this article.
1. Don't let yourself be convinced that you have to go to the gym. There is literally so much that you can do with your own body weight at home. Running is something I absolutely fell in love with.
2. Keep a gym bag in your car. I cannot preach this enough. I am always in a hurry to do too many things in one day so packing a bag the night before and sitting it by my door is a great way to make time. If I have it in the car, when I'm driving by the gym on my way home I basically have to stop. Right?
3. Don't put yourself in a super strict schedule. You're human. You're friends are going to call you up last minute and ask to grab lunch. Don't miss your life because you think you absolutely must go to the gym at the same time everyday. If you miss a day just stay a little longer the rest of the week.
4. After gym showers are the best showers. Period.
5. Do little activities all throughout the day that keeps your heartbeat a little more elevated.
6. Don't hate Pokemon GO, literally a great way to exercise while keeping your mind from saying "I can't do five miles today".
7. If you have a free morning, get dressed for the gym before you have your coffee. Your mind may be telling you you're too tired to workout, but you will be amazed at just what putting on your clothes can do.
8. Don't try to change your habits all in one day. Start by working out first, slowly cut back or change the foods you eat. Soon enough you won't even think twice about your choices.
9. Set mini goals and reward yourself. For instance, right now I am focusing on inches and my mile speed. I want to get down to a 10 minute mile, once I do I will treat myself to new tires for my bike or new workout gear.
10. Do yoga. Seriously.
