12 Things Every Retail Worker Can Relate To

No, I can't give you an extra discount "just because".

12 Things Every Retail Worker Can Relate To

Everyone knows that retail workers have to put up with rude customers, but no one warns you about the hundreds of annoying little things that will happen every day. Here are just a few of the many things that made me wanna tear my hair out on a daily basis when I worked in retail.

1. When an item doesn't scan and the customer says "that means it's free!"

I'm convinced that middle aged white people all get together and exchange jokes because this happened nearly every day.

2. "At least it's almost the weekend!"

This isn't an office job, ma'am. I work on the weekends.

3. Customers trying to flirt with you

One time a man asked me if I was married, and when I responded with "no I'm only 19", he said that was no excuse. Another man circled my register for close to an hour, not buying anything. One man straight up reached across the counter and grabbed my hand. And yes, all these men were at least 40 and older.

4. When none of your other coworkers know what they're doing

It's okay, I can just work the only open register while you guys hide out in the break room. It's cool.

5. "But this was on sale a week ago!"

Then you should have bought it a week ago. I don't have time to explain the passage of time to you.

6. "I want to speak to the manager."

I mean, they're just gonna tell you the same thing I'm telling you, but I'd be happy to make you their problem instead of mine.

7. No one wants to be the one who answers the phone

At my store, we only had one register with a phone. We all avoided that register so much that one of our managers had to tell us someone had to start answering the phone or else we would all be in trouble.

8. That one really weird customer that comes in every day

For me, it was a dude who came in every day and bought 25 cent thongs by the hundreds. By the time I stopped working there, he probably had bought upwards of 2,000 thongs.

9. You never know what you'll find in the dressing rooms

Checking the dressing rooms at the end of the day can be straight up terrifying. You might find the usual annoying amount of clothes that people were too lazy to put back, or you might find poop smeared on the walls. Every day is a new shitty (lol) adventure.

10. When people come in a minute before closing

There's no feeling more defeating than when the store is empty, you're closing up your register, you think you might actually be able to go home at a decent time for once, and then someone walks into the store and insists on taking their sweet time.

11. There are customers who go out of their way to be rude...

I once had a guy who refused to believe me about the price of his items and had me re-scan them all 3 times. Each time it showed that I was right, but he just screamed at me and called me an idiot until my manager intervened. I let my manager handle it while I went to the break room and cried a little. If you can't see retail workers as human beings, then you shouldn't be allowed to shop anywhere.

12. ... Then there are customers who go out of their way to be nice

Sweet old ladies would come through my line calling me "baby" and "sweetie" and assuring me it was okay when I told them I was sorry the computer was taking too long. Teen girls told me they liked my outfit or my makeup. One lady chatted with me about the Star Wars themed wedding she was planning. For every 1 bad customer, there's 5 nice ones to make up for it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
