Surprisingly, there's more to YouTube than cat videos and clips from TV shows. With over 1 billion users uploading nearly 300,000 videos daily, YouTube has become the platform of choice for anyone wishing to broadcast their talents. The site has provided us with celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Jenna Mourey (commonly known as Jenna Marbles). However, journalist and vlogger Ben Cook said in his "Becoming YouTube" series that 80 percent of creators are male, but most viewers are female. According to an article by The Daily Dot, only 34 women were featured as special guests at the YouTube conference VidCon last year. Many of which were beauty vloggers, which makes up the majority of women-driven content.

Even though the female-driven beauty community is one of the most viewed topics on the site, their creators are "less respected," says creator Lex Croucher. At the same time, there is a flourishing community of women on YouTube, with thought-provoking, comedic, and intelligent content. So, here are 10 awesome, yet underrated, women of YouTube you should be watching.

1. Akilah Hughes (SmoothieFreak)

Number of subscribers: 99,071

Best known for: “Meet Your First Black Girlfriend”, “Honest Everyday Makeup Tutorial”, “Intersectional Feminism and Pizza”

Yes, it’s Akilah, obviously! And no, she didn’t win the National Spelling Bee. Akilah is a social justice vlogger with a bit of flare. Her unique sketches and creative social commentary has garnered the attention of YouTube celebrities such as John Green. By day, she’s a vlogger and writer, but by night, she’s a stand up comedienne. She describes her channel as a place to find social commentary, stand-up and sketch comedy, beauty, fashion, and lifestyle. Akilah uses her channel to educate her audience about issues of feminism, race, and sexism through sketches and parodies. If you’re a fan of that type of humor, subscribe immediately. You won’t regret it.

2. Rachel Anderson (Rachelleea/justsugarandspice)

Number of subscribers: 106,021

Best known for: “Salvage Your Jeans | DIY Ripped Distressed Denim," “HOW TO KISS," “How To Look Like Taylor Swift | 1989 Makeup Tutorial”

This sugar-sweet Aussie came on the YouTube radar about a year ago when she uploaded her “Salvage Your Jeans | DIY Ripped Distressed Denim” video (which now has nearly 900,000 views). But this Taylor Swift look-a-like is best known for her makeup tutorials. She also caters to the vegan crowd with her “What I Ate Today” videos offering inspiration to anyone interested in a vegan diet. Also, look forward to her Sunday Q&As, where she shares hilarious stories from her life, and educates women about the changes they go through as they get older.

3. Savannah "Sav" Brown (savanamazing)

Number of subscribers: 142,602

Best known for: "What Guys Look For In Girls - A Slam Poem," "sav rants with a coffee: gender and expression," "we are all ants (utube and celeb culture)," poetry

Although many of her "Old Era" videos are now private, Sav's "New Era" has stretched beyond the quirky tween her subscribers knew and loved. Her channel skyrocketed after her response to Nash Grier's controversial "What Guys Look For In Girls" video. Her response has over 3 million views to date. Sav still makes videos reading her poems, as well as discussing topics of sexuality and YouTube-celebrity culture. She speaks like a poet, and her topics of interest bring a new, refreshing perspective to the table.

4. Abby Williamson (abb3rz07)

Number of subscribers: 13,713

Best known for: "RANT: ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL," "Calling Out Sam Pepper," "SO YOU WANT TO START AN ETSY STORE?"

Abby is your favorite hipster and connoisseur of Lush, indie music, and bright lipstick. She uploads nearly every day, doing everything from seasonal makeup tutorials, to feminist rants, and music recommendations for your next road trip. During the Sam Pepper abuse scandal in Sept. 2014, Abby's video was featured on Channel 4 News in the United Kingdom alongside other creators, such as Laci Green, speaking out against sexual abuse on the site. But, besides her though-provoking video content, Abby is also a talented photographer and often takes pictures of bands at shows. You can check her blog out, here.

5. Rachel Whitehurst (icallitambrosia)

Number of subscribers: 155,374

Best known for: Chrachel Cooks, makeup tutorials, Drunk Reviews

Guy Fieri would be proud of the way Rachel “rolls out” the humor in her varied vlogging style. Rachel’s channel started in 2010 because of Tumblr’s awful video quality. Her audience grew substantially after her “How a Jew Spends Christmas” rant went viral on Tumblr. Fast forward almost five years, and Rachel has amassed over 150,000 subscribers. Her channel will cater to anyone’s taste, with videos about cooking, sexuality, makeup tutorials, hauls, feminism, and causal follow-me-around vlogs. You’ll fall in love with her #nofilter personality and non-traditional video structure.

6. Taylor Adele Smith (tadelesmith)

Number of subscribers: 132,331

Best known for: “5 Ways to Fake a Thigh Gap," “Top 8 Beauty Trends Men Hate,” “Feminist Makeup Tutorial (PARODY)”

Taylor’s makeup tutorial and feminist parodies ride in the wake of the third-wave feminist movement. Although she does not upload as frequently, the videos on her channel will leave you entertained for hours. She mostly creates makeup tutorials based on typical issues people in their 20s face, such as makeup for finals, or a feminist makeup tutorial. Her subscriber count jumped when her “Top 8 Beauty Trends Men Hate” (a lookbook based on the article) video went viral on Tumblr. But her BuzzFeed style makes her the perfect entertainment for any frequent social media user.

7. Hayley Williams (hayleywi11iams)

Number of subscribers: 505,599

Best known for: “DIY Room Decorations: Tumblr Inspired Crystals," “DIY Valentine’s Day Treats," DIYs, fashion, beauty

Have you see a cool DIY project on Pinterest lately? Or are you so unhealthily obsessed with Tumblr you crave its aesthetic? Well, Hayley Williams is your girl. Williams has only been making videos since December 2013, but she has the highest number of subscribers on this list. Her colorful editing, chipper voice, and easy step-by-step DIYs will have you clicking subscribe before watching an entire video. Williams’s “DIY Valentine’s Day Treats” video was also featured on the Today Show. Also, her dog Beau is the cutest. Just saying.

8. Lex Croucher (tyrannosauruslexxx)

Number of subscribers: 116,259

Best known for: “ice-ice play doh”, “What is Consent?”, “The ‘Song’ Song”

Lex is blunt, British, and absolutely frigging hilarious. She became prominent during the wake of the Alex Day scandal when YouTube recommended her video “What is Consent?” in which she discusses the issues of rape-culture, and the meaning of yes versus no. Although her content can get serious, Lex still manages to incorporate her humor and singing ability. Her vlogging style is more traditional, with sit down videos discussing topics ranging from educational to anecdotal. Either way, you'll always learn something new from Lex.

9. Franchesca Ramsey (chescaleigh)

Number of subscribers: 195,999

Best known for: "Sh*t White Girls Say...to Black Girls," "How Slut Shaming Becomes Victim Blaming," "Turn Your Phone! ("No Scrubs" parody with Andrew Huang, DailyGrace, Hannah Hart, Soundlyawake)"

Franchesca's passion for all things social justice shines through her unique brand of comedy. During the 2012 "Sh*t ____ Say/Do" era, Franchesca instantly became a hit with her "Sh*t White Girls Say...to Black Girls" video, which according to her website, was featured on ABC, MSNBC, Anderson Cooper, and The Daily Mail. There isn't a single video on her channel that won't leave you inspired and informed. She combines heavy social justice topics of race, sexism, and human rights with sketch comedy, song parody, and topical humor. You can also find her work on Upworthy, as well as her web news series with MTV, "Decoded."

10. Meghan Tonjes (tonjesml)

Number of subscribers: 206,302

Best known for: Covers, Original songs, Social commentary

Meghan is an incredibly talented singer (she was even featured on Ellen!). But aside from her singing voice, she also voices her opinions. On certain days of the week, Meghan will talk about hot topics that anger her, sing a song, take song requests, answer user-submitted questions, and react to videos. In 2014, she got Instagram to apologize removing her “belfie,” or butt-selfie, despite allowing thinner women to post them. She also makes her videos relatable to the average viewer by using the traditional sit-down vlogging style. Rather than speaking at you, her videos feel more like a conversation.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
