I once claimed to be 'woke', now I roll my eyes everytime I see the word. Don’t get me wrong, I loved how the word woke originally challenged all Americans to “wake up” to the injustice that is happening in the country. There is so much going on in today's world and the partisan nature of this country is only making matters worse.
One of the ways this generation expresses itself and its issues is through social media and from social media comes social media lingo form which woke arise. The term really hit popularity when Childish Gambino released the artwork that is “Awaken, My Love!” and the track “Redbone” hit the ears of music lovers everywhere.
“Stay woke!” was being exclaimed in sing-song around the country and around the internet.
The word woke became immersed in pop culture, instead of being used in activist culture. Using the work 'woke' so freely creates a numbness in activist culture. Not everything is 'woke'. Realizing your man is cheating on you, then keying is his car is not woke. Yes I know that is a ridiculous thing to consider woke, but that is what I see when I scroll down my timeline.
Being woke isn’t a cute thing you say.
Being woke a symbolic word that portrays the sleepiness of the government, big businesses, politicians, and most of all the people! The word woke exemplifies the experience of the minority being controlled by people whose eyes are halfway open to how the world really works. Being woke calls out the 1% for falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into the oppressed society. Being woke is pouring cold water on the people who are daydreaming about how to further create class division.
Putting woke in your Twitter bio and doing absolutely nothing to change the society we live in makes you sleepy.
I’m not saying that we should stop using the word completely. Obviously, there’s freedom of speech. But the word woke has an important metaphorical as well as literal meaning that oppressed Americans need. If you’re woke, then you really need to be wide awake.
