As a native to Wichita Kansas it is easy to take for granted some of the gems that our community has created. Here are some of the awesome things that I love about my home
1.The Community
The people here are some of the nicest you'll come into contact with. Not only is the Wichita community about supporting local anything, they're genuine. You can usually tell when they smile while passing you on the sidewalk, or wave while driving in the other direction, maybe it's holding a door open and saying please and thank you, yes ma'm and no ma'm. Even if you are a complete stranger, these people will treat you like family.
2.The Donut Whole
This place is seriously the best. It has that "home" coffee shop vibe with live music and some really awesome decor. With a variety of donuts such as maple bacon, cherry citrus, dirt n' worms, key lime cheesecake, and so much more, you will never get bored of the choices. they also have some bomb coffee, leaf tea, milk tea w/ boba, and even ice cream. You will find a variety of people from college students studying for finals, or a family bringing the kids in on a Saturday morning.
3. Beautiful Quilt
Being the air capitol, Wichita brings a huge amount of people from different places all over the world. Our community is made of so many different races, from different culture and religion. The best part about this diversity is that we all get along, our community does not fight. a great example of this was during summer of 2016 with the Black Lives Matter movement was sweeping throughout the nation, while some communities lost lives, We acknowledged that black lives DO matter and this is so much more than just a trend across the country. After the march downtown, police and the black lives matter protesters gathered together and had a community picnic. they discussed the serious issues between police and civilians, they danced, they laughed, and they loved one another as a community. That's MY city, and I couldn't be more proud, Instead of thinking of Wichita as a melting pot, that blends all of the different cultures together I call it a beautiful quilt, because we are not dismissing the uniqueness of each race and culture, but rather embracing, respecting, and loving each others differences as a community.
4. Sedgwick County Zoo
As a native to Wichita, I grew up at our zoo and sometimes took it for granted, it wasn't until I got to college and saw how excited the other students from out of state were about our zoo that I realized its actually pretty awesome!
5.The Anchor
Seriously the best food I've ever had. Try the Haystack!
6. The weather
While some find the weather here sort of a pain, its unpredictable tendencies keep it interesting, and you can always have a great lightening show from your front porch.
7. There's no place like home
Cliche I know. But this couldn't be more true about Wichita KS. While it is fun to travel and go to big cities, beaches, and mountains, Wichita is a wonderful place to come home to after being away. You're always welcomed back with a smile and a warm community feeling.
