Sisters are there when you need them most — whether you're sad, happy, angry, excited or even hungry. They know what makes you smile, but they also know what makes you frown. Sure, she always ratted you out to mom and dad. And, sure, you got her ugly hand-me-downs. But, in the end, you’re the luckiest girl in the world to have an older sister.
Here are 10 reasons why, no matter what, your older sister should always be your best friend.
1. She taught you how to break the rules the right way.
She was the test dummy to see what really pushed your parent's buttons. Maybe she threw the first party or decided to go out on Mischief Night for the first time; either way, she probably got grounded more often than you. Thanks for that, sis. You broke in the parents before I was even born. Only a true friend would do that.
2. She helped you out with your nonexistent fashion sense.
Let's be honest, we all tried to copy our older sister (and probably still do). We thought she was the hippest, coolest girl in town (and we still do). She helped us through all of our interesting fashion statements. Younger sisters everywhere are extremely thankful for that ...
3. She set standards for you.
She brought home the first boyfriend, got the first A in class and became captain of her track team way before you. She paved the way for you and gave your last name meaning. She was, and always will be, your inspiration.
4. She's brutally honest with you.
Younger sisters immediately know who to turn to for honest advice. Older sisters are the only ones who will really tell you if you're acting stupid, dressing ugly or dating the wrong guy. Thank you, sis, for telling me exactly what I want to hear.
5. She's the responsible sibling.
She's the one who drove you to school or made you dinner when your parents weren't around. She is almost always in charge of birthday gifts, which makes your life a whole lot easier. Maybe she did your math homework or straightened your hair for prom, but either way, she's the responsible one in the duo ... and there always has to be a responsible one.
6. Sibling sleepovers.
Need I say more? There is no greater feeling than snuggling in bed with your sister after, what seems like, the longest day in history. Getting separated from your older sister is one of the hardest things you'll ever go through, but it makes the sleepovers a whole lot better. And, I promise you, they get better with age.
7. She brings out your true colors.
We all have our best friends, but no one knows you the way your older sister does. She stayed by your side throughout your ugly phase, boy crazy phase, the "I hate mom and dad" phase and plenty more. She is one of the only people who will continuously talk to you no matter how weird you are. Friends come and go, but sisters are forever.
8. She understands how insane your family drives you.
She's the only one you look to for a little sanity in the family. She also brings you back down to earth when you're being a bit too unreasonable.
9. She makes you laugh like never before.
She may be the responsible one, but she knows how to crack a joke. Maybe it's her mom-dancing, or the way she Snapchats like an old lady, but you can't deny that she's funny. She's one of the only people that makes you laugh without even trying.
10. She's never going away.
Your older sister will be by your side no matter what. She's always there to protect you, stick up for you, give you advice and put on a smile on your face. She will find the time to spend with you no matter how busy her schedule is. She's the one that lights up your phone with dumb jokes, outfit questions and the latest celebrity gossip. She's the one you seek shelter with when mom and dad won't leave you alone. She's the one you can goof off with one minute and be screaming at the next. She'll really always be older sister you never wanted. But as you grow up, you'll realize that the pain in the butt, responsible, mom-like sister born before you will forever be your best friend.
You're stuck with me, sis. And for that, I am forever grateful.
If your older sister isn't your best friend, you're doing something wrong.
Here's to all the older sisters in the world. Don't ever change. Thank you for being you.
