I was one of those people that tried meditation on numerous occasions and thought that it just wasn't for me. I typically experienced no change in my mood or presence after I meditated. As more time went on in my adult life, I realized that you have to experiment with meditation to see what works for you. It could be that you need guided meditation, instrumentals, chant music, or literally no noise at all.
If you are someone that knows you have a lot going on and can feel the stress levels being added to your plate, you could probably benefit from meditating every single day, even for just 10 minutes.
Currently, I have had a lot of life changes — moving to NYC, starting a new job, starting business school while my husband is starting law school, and adjusting to a new city while still trying to balance my family life and begin a new social life. The list really could go on. These changes began about three months ago and if I didn't make meditation a habit, I truly believe I would not be able to add anything else to my plate and remain calm. Even with all these changes and obstacles being thrown my way, I do feel at ease and more calm about everything.
Meditation doesn't clear your head and make you stop thinking about every little thing you have going on, but it does help you to control how you react to every single little thing going on.
I have found meditation to make me more patient and a lot more rational when it comes to controlling my emotions. It also helps me to overcome stress, reduce anxiety, and focus better. I believe that meditation has allowed me to embrace peace and quiet more. It feels as though there is no reason to overreact, overthink, or over-analyze anything.
Meditation is a coping method for life, seriously.
I make it a goal to meditate at least 10 minutes a day and it's not always in the same fashion. Sometimes I have extra time in the morning to squeeze a quick meditation session in. Other times I literally go for a break during work and find myself sitting on a public park bench. If I am really desperate to get a meditation session in during the day, I will meditate on the subway (if I get a seat). This is something you can do anywhere and it could drastically improve all facets of your life.
There's a reason why meditation is an ancient practice that is highly regarded in various cultures and religions. Do your mental health a favor and make meditation part of your life.
