Why "What Doesn't Kill You Makes you Stronger" Is Inaccurate

We have all heard it, we all even said it at one time or another. Sometimes, it is said when we are working out and getting fit. Sometimes it is said when people give up certain foods for a diet or lifestyle change. But when it should not be said is when someone is going through a situation they cannot change or control, and is emotionally and mentally draining.

In that situation, I think the exact thing you should not tell them is, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." By telling them this, you are completely invalidating their feeling, and essentially you are brushing them off. Whether you mean to or not, this is what happens. This phrase is good for a workout regimen or getting yourself on a new diet. But it should not be used to comfort a friend who is upset, or depressed, or feeling like they are not going to be okay. When I was going through my own trauma, sickness, and heartache, it infuriated me when someone would tell me this because it felt like it was killing me. It felt like I wasn't going to make it.

I have met many cancer patients, their friends, and their parents. Even from the parents I have spoken to, they voice their disgust at this piece of advice. Sometimes when you are trying to comfort a friend and you don't know what to say, a cliche like this one may pop up, but think about it, would you want someone to tell you this is a heart wrenching and emotionally unstable situation? A friend of mine committed suicide nearly two years ago today and someone had the nerve to tell me it was going to make the family stronger. It does not work that way.

Life hands out a hard deal, sometimes. Sometimes, those hard deals last years and sometimes it feels like it won't stop. But it will. It may make you stronger later on. But it will definitely change the perspective. It will change your view of the world and of people. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. But don't give up.

If you are reading this, think twice before you give a friend or a stranger advice you wouldn't want to hear yourself. I like the saying, "God gives His toughest battles to His strongest soldiers." Sometimes, at a young age, children and teens are dealt situations many adults have never faced in their lives and they do not know how to make it better. But you cannot make it better. Even that can be too much, though. Just think about what you say and how you say it. Sometimes, a person wants a hug rather than some advice that they probably won't even hear or listen to. Just be there for them and love them. After all, is that not what will make us stronger is the end?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
