I've been a Swiftie since her teardrops were on her guitar. I didn't think that I could love this human being any more than I did when she was country. Like everyone else, I was scared when she announced that she was abandoning her Nashville sound for the bright lights of the Big Apple and went full pop. But then "1989" happened and Taylor Swift blessed all of the basic girls around the world.
Infamously, the pop star has been criticized and humiliated by rap mogul Kanye West publicly since the VMAs in 2009. Their feud seemed to end this August when she presented Mr. Kim Kardashian with an award at the VMAs, a move that seemed genuine and promising. Last week, the most famous egotistical bully in music released a new album. On his single "Famous," he says: "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b**** famous." Very classy, bro...
Swift made a mark on pop culture long before any association with him. This is a perfect example of how highly this man thinks of himself.
"1989" was the clear winner for Best Album at the 58th Grammy Awards. After she glided up to the stage like the queen that she is and thanked her adoring fans and producers, she then proceeded with the best acceptance speech in recent memory.
"As the first woman to win album of the year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world."
Swift owns any award show that she attends, either winning awards or dancing like a nerd in the crowd. Last Monday, however, was her night arguably more than any other night before. That show reinforced the love and admiration that I have for this woman. She deserves respect from every human on Earth who has ever even heard the opening notes of "Shake It Off." Yes, she has incredible style, flawless hair, and cool Instagram posts, but there's so much more to her than surface beauty.
This lady, while shutting down West, did it in a way that exuded as much class as was possible in that situation. While standing up for her fellow women and people of the music industry, she defended herself without lowering herself to West's methods like cussing or name calling.
No matter what, Swift shows kindness to all, generosity to the needy, and love to those who love her back. However, no one will ever disrespect her and get away with it, not even someone as self-proclaimed who calls himself "Yeezus." That's what I love about her.
Swift won three Grammy awards that night as well as something even better: respect.
I'll leave everyone with this. *mic drop*
