Why My Sorority Sisters Are More Than Just My Friends

We share a bond that outsiders don’t understand and that we can’t explain.

A sister, by definition, means “a girl or woman who has one or both of the same parents as you.” When you’re in a sorority, though, the term “sister” has a totally different meaning to you. Your sisters are your go-to girls, the girls you know that you can fall back on when you’ve been having rough times, the girls that will eat pizza with you at 2 a.m....these are the girls that are going to become closer than best friends. These are the girls that you will always have a special bond with - a bond that you could never share with anyone else.

My sisters and my organization honestly mean so much to me, and I’m sure members of other organizations feel the same about theirs. My sisters have always been there for me, since day 1, even when they barely knew me. This truly showed me something incredible - I had been accepted into a wonderful group of selfless, caring, and supportive ladies. All of the young women in my sorority inspire me to be the greatest version of myself that I can be. It’s an incredible feeling when you walk into a room full of your sisters and you’re always greeted with smiles, hugs, and hellos.

My sisters are more than just my friends because they see the good in me when I don’t always see the good in myself. They are constantly reminding me of all the great things that I have accomplished. They constantly open my eyes and remind me of my bright future. My sisters are constantly pushing me past my limits to help me grow as a person. No two sisters are alike! Some of my sisters are just like me, whereas some of my sisters are very different from me. Regardless, all of my sisters offer me new experiences and help me broaden my horizons in ways that I could never do alone.

I wouldn’t be who I am today if I wasn’t a part of such an incredible organization. If I wasn’t constantly surrounded by the love and support of these young ladies, it would be so hard for me to accomplish the things that I do. My sorority sisters have grown to be more than just my friends - they are now my family, and family is forever.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
