Valentines Day sneaks up on everyone. For two months after Christmas its everywhere you go. Heart-shaped candies cover the shelves, endless jewelry commercials consume commercials and everyone is in search of someone "special." On February 14th, sour singles post novels on Facebook voicing to the world how much they hate Valentine's Day, but in reality this is the exact reason that they are single. The reason is not because they have a voice and sometimes, an entirely too big of a mouth, but because of social media. Social media has slowly been evolving and endlessly ruining far too many relationships and hears why:
Good ole' Facebook. Not only a great way to keep in contact with your friends, but also an excellent tool for stalking your significant other. Why are they liking other people's pictures? Who are they messaging? If you get too caught up on their Facebook page you could catch yourself snooping through their messages from 2010 wondering why they never told you they were talking to _____________. Facebook is a form of social media that's driving everyone NUTS because it allows people to follow their significant other without the big black hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses. You start to wonder about not only what they are putting on their Facebook, but also what they are not.
Labels
How many times have you heard people ask if someone is "Facebook Official," and if the answer is no, there is always that question,"Why?" In today's society, the status displaying you're unavailable on everyone and anyone you have ever met in your live's news feed is the ultimate proof that you are unattainable. It's fine if you don't post the change of relationship status on Facebook, but if one person is against it and the other is not, then there comes the difficult question; why? It instantly makes the significant other wonder, "Why doesn't he want people to know about me?" "What is he hiding?" It brings about doubt, that at times wasn't there to begin with.
Snapchat
"Why is SHE your best friend on Snapchat? What have you been sending her?" We've all heard these questions more than once. Snapchat recently disabled the ability to view others' best friends, but have reported that it is only temporary. Your relationship will soon again be subject to the interrogation of your best friends on Snapchat.
Tinder
The surge in IPhones and smart phones have also brought a new age of online dating apps. Tinder being one of them, allows users to choose who they would like to talk to by liking one another's pictures. Why is this making us single? Some say Tinder is an app for solely hook ups, but still people go on it looking for real relationships and vise versa. There is no clear line if someone is looking for a relationship, hook up or if the person is actually just crazy or cat fishing you. (Catfish: referring to the MTV show, where people portray themselves as someone better looking to attract online relationships.) Tinder, an app create in attempt to make dating easier, has actually blurred the lines of dating making everyone unsure of what the other is looking for.
The Endless Amount of Social Media
Have you ever seen the movie "He's Just Not That Into You" with Drew Barrymore? There's a great scene where she talks about this guy leaving her a voicemail at work so she called him at home and he emailed her and so on. She made an excellent point, all of the new technology makes dating exhausting. When your friends ask you if you've talked to your guy lately there sometimes isn't a clear answer. He Snapchatted you, but didn't text you, does that count? He messaged you on Facebook, but never replied to your answer, that's technically talking right? What ever happened to the days where we would call one another. There would be a fine line between communicating and silence.
Social media is a great way to get your message across, advertise your company, or in some cases, your relationship. Once we, guys and girls, stop relying on social media to get information about our significant other or maintain contact we might be able to pick up a phone once and a while and find/keep a relationship. Lastly, for those Drew Barrymore girls that don't know if a Snapchat or email means he's trying to talk to you, let's all face that facts that he may be, just not that into you.
