Thanksgiving is when celebrate the things we have and give thanks, without thinking caring about the things we don't. The day after we disregard everything we gave thanks for and care so much about the things we don't have that we're willing to beat people over it.
Black Friday is an idea I just cant wrap my mind around. Is it ever really worth trampling people for a better deal on a bigger television? Is it worth punching somebody over the last Wii U? And why does this happen the day after Thanksgiving?
What's worse is that companies are feeding this greed by opening earlier and earlier, some even on Thanksgiving. Not only does this destroy the entire meaning of Thanksgiving, it also means employees are sometimes forced to work instead of spending time with family. Even with holiday pay, it doesn't make up for being forced to work during any holiday, let alone when it's just because of a sale reinforcing people's greed.
Another thing for these employees is that they have to deal with the insanity of their store. Overtime or holiday pay doesn't always make up for crazy patrons causing fights or screaming at employees for not having more of an item in stock, or a certain item on sale. While this doesn't always happen, it's much more likely to.
On sales that happen on Friday, they normally start extremely early in the morning. People line up hours before, maybe even the day before, to get deals on things they don't need, or sometimes things they don't even want. Stores encourage this by opening earlier and earlier and making even more limited deals. If only 100 television sets are on sale, better start lining up at least a day before. This just causes more fights over items and in the lines.
In the end, items that people don't want shouldn't cause straight up brawls over the items being 25% off. Stay thankful for a day instead and it'll be much less stressful, harmful, and dangerous for everybody. Safety should be more important than sales.
