Why I Am Not Politically Correct

Political correctness is not a medicine that will fix things. It is a way to say we should tiptoe around our words and actions not to offend others. If we continue to tell people that they must be politically correct by not saying certain words or phrases, we are essentially desensitizing our society. We have allowed people to stop caring about political correctness, thus stop caring about the problems which inspired it. Being politically correct does not make you correct.

Our society has come to the point where it is politically incorrect to say, “Merry Christmas” since not every single person in our country celebrates Christmas, which is fine, but that is not a substantial reason for me personally to avoid saying “Merry Christmas” in fear of offending someone.

Political correctness is killing our society. It seems like everyone is the "political correctness police" now-a-days, you can’t go anywhere, say anything, wear anything, or even drive anything without someone being offended for some reason or another. We are raising a society of whiny, childish adults who just look to find fault in anything they can.

I had a personal experience with political correctness (well many, but we won’t go there) in high school, I wore a shirt to school, a regular t-shirt with the words “Virginity Rocks” on it. Before the first bell rang to send us off to class for the day I hear my name over the intercom. I thought nothing of it, seeing as though I wasn’t the trouble making type, I figured my mom realized I forgot something at home and came to bring it to me, but that was not the case. I walk into the office and the first words I hear are “Do you think there is anything wrong with your outfit today?” I said “No, I’m wearing a t-shirt, jeans and tennis shoes?” So I was told it wasn’t what I was wearing it was the message my shirt was sending…I was given 3 options, 1) Change my shirt. 2) Go home for the day. Or 3) Sit in ISS (in school suspension) for the day. I was told not to send a message of staying pure, not to respect myself, not to let others know they aren’t “weird” for not having sex in high school contrary to what society deems acceptable, all because I offended someone and it was politically incorrect to wear a shirt with “a message like that” on it.

Political correctness is a way for many people to not hear the truth, by banning words or phrases we are taking away the right of a person to express the way they feel about an issue. As a society let’s stop worrying about if something we say will offend someone, because in reality everything we say could offend someone. I’m offended by political correctness so let’s all put an end to being politically correct and spend more time worrying about the things that are important to us as individuals.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
