Music and fashion; The balancing act between creativity and control. Without music, could there really be a need for dominant fashion icons? Or without fashion, would there be a desire to uniquely express yourself through music? The answers for both of these questions are definitely controversial, which is ironically almost the exciting part of it all.
The influence music has on fashion as of late is increasing by every new top hit released on the radio, every risky music video uploaded to YouTube, and every music artist deciding to start their own clothing label. Music is one of the most influential industries out there, showing people the cool way to wear more alternative items when it comes to their personal wardrobe. Glam Rock is one style of music that has transformed into an entire popular theme of fashion, being talked about through Vogue and shown on the runway during fashion week. We can easily distinguish each band, artist, or genre by a certain style, and fashion is starting to follow this example.
Fashion to this day is more about dressing unique and being true to yourself rather than following the trend and just simply blending in. Music has also always been something that is known to express this uniqueness, which then translates into fashion helping music artists to not only show their true colors through their lyrics, but also by the clothing they wear while playing it. A band that is truly expressing this idea is a British girl band called Little Mix. These four girls are not afraid of taking each fashion photo shoot to a new extreme. Showing both new styling, as well as feminism, they never fail to impress.
Whether everyone will admit it or not, fashion matters to everyone, and so does music. There is simply something to find out there for each individual when it comes to either music or fashion. Both music and fashion are intended to send a message, whether that is by wearing a shirt that may be a little too see-through, or writing a song that says one too many cuss words. These two factors shape the world’s popular culture knowingly and unknowingly, and will continue to do so for many, many years to come.
