Miami has long been known as a football school, with the exception of the year that Shane Larkin lead us to a Number one seed in the NCAA March Madness tournament. This year, we are definitely headed for a really nice run. Here is why:
1. Beating Utah and Butler
Utah and Butler were both ranked in the top 25, with Butler at 22 and Utah at 16, when we defeated both teams. We beat Utah 90-66. As an unranked team, we blew out Utah by 24 on a neutral court. That is nothing to ignore. Butler was a quality win at the score of 85-75. UM basketball defeated two top 25 teams by a total of 34 points. THIRTY FOUR. Butler and Utah were both considered locks for the championship of that tournament and we won it.
2. Toney Jakiri, Sheldon McLellan, and Angel Rodriguez are the real deal
I just got back from the UF vs. Miami game. UF is rebuilding yes, but they're considered a very lethal defensive team. McLellan dropped 24 points, knocking down contested shots from three while looking like a future NBA caliber player. Rodriguez was quicker than anyone on the court, consistently darting by defenders and always making the right pass. Last but not least, Jakiri. Toney was unreal tonight and has been all season. His rebounding prowess is unmatched by anyone on the floor and his rim protection is too. He missed some time in the first half with an injury and when he came back, he blocked 3 shots in the first 10 minutes.
3. We are DEEP
We could hypothetically play 11 kids. All of them could compete at the level they need to, even the freshman. This is going to help in case of injury or if UM goes deep into overtime.
4. So Much fun to watch
Watching UM basketball is so unbelievably fun. The kids out there just look like they're enjoying what they're doing and putting all of their effort into their play. I cannot wait to see where this team goes and all I know is this, we are for real.
