The other weekend I went to my cousin’s baby shower. There, I had to mingle awkwardly with my extended relatives. As a student, I always hated the questions that relatives ask me. What am I doing with my life? What’s my major? What are my plans? Well, I’m sorry to say that I don’t know my plans are at the moment. I don’t even know what am I going to eat for breakfast tomorrow…

At the baby shower, I was approached by this middle-aged lady. I don’t know her name, but I have seen her before at other family gatherings. She asked what school I went to and what my major was. I replied proudly, that I am a journalism major at the University of Maryland. The lady raised her eyebrows in shock and said, “Journalism? You won’t find a job in that.” A bit taken back, I replied that Maryland is one of the top ten schools for journalism and that news is a huge asset to society. Without the news, you won’t know what’s going on.

Also, with a journalism degree, I could do so much than reporting. Today, journalism majors can work in public relations, communications, digital media, advertising and marketing, technical writing, publishing, magazine writers, and creative writing. There are so many opportunities that journalism majors can do. Unfortunately, the lady wasn’t impressed as much with my list and asked what I’m minoring in.

I replied that I’m leaning towards business or teaching. However, teaching would more of back-up or future option for me. She nodded her head and said, “at least with a teaching job, you make some money and have a stable job in. If I were you, I would change your major. " The lady proceeds to walk off casually. I was flabbergasted.

Flabergasted, surprised, and a bit shocked as to how someone, a sensible adult could so quickly crush someone's dreams. But I forced myself to ignore her comments and look at the insulting conversation as something positive. I have the control to do whatever I want with my future. I have the power to decide to do a journalism major and find success in that. If journalism doesn't work out there are a variety of options for me. I have the skills and qualifications for many different things. Truthfully, I love to write and journalism will always be a part of me. I am an aspiring journalist and I will succeed in this cruel world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
