Millennials: you can't live with us, you can't live without us. But mostly, you can't live without us (you're getting old and we're gonna have to take over soon).
There are many mixed opinions on millennials, or anyone born between 1980 and 2000. Mostly, there is a lot of hate around the millennial generation, but as we millennials like to say, ~haters gonna hate.~
Perhaps I'm biased, or perhaps it's just my overly confident millennial attitude that non-millennials hate so much, but I think being a millennial is quite hilarious, in a mostly ironic sense, and a very fun time.
We have a ridiculous vocabulary.
Lit, fleek, fire emoji, bae, low-key. As if that isn't enough, we even cut down the words that already made sense. TBH, LOL, V (in place of very), Hundo P (hundred percent). We experience FOMO (fear of missing out) and we have JOMO (joy of missing out). The struggle is so real; I literally can't even.
We put ~*~these swiggly punctuation things~*~ around words.
Even though it has never been discussed, we just understand the ~emphasis~ of the punctuation. I can only imagine my dad trying to understand ~what~ ~this~ ~means.~ Sorry Dad, I'll have to update you soon. Admit it though, you're reading ~this~ in your head differently than just this.
We have multiple generation-wide inside jokes.
A lot of trends pop up among the millennials and we're the only ones who understand them. For example, "What are thooooooooose?" If you understand that reference and you are not a millennial, please contact me, because you're cool. A year from now, that won't be funny. It is our millennial obligation to keep up with the trends and remain a part of the generation-wide inside jokes that only we are laughing at in unity.
Non-Millenials have absolutely no idea what to do with us.
It's hilarious how many articles are written about the good, the bad, and the ugly of hiring millennials. Even more articles refer to millennials as if we are a different species. The older generations are trying so hard to figure us out. Newsflash: we haven't even figured ourselves out yet! Just go with the flow and love us ~for who we are.~ And just hire us. Please. We desperately do need and appreciate that unpaid internship, even though it totally sucks.
We have the coolest gizmos and gadgets.
We get a lot of criticism for our poor face-to-face communication skills and for not playing outside enough. If Grandma had an iPad, she would be taking selfies from the couch over riding her bike too. This is the world we were given. If you hate technology so much, maybe the older generations shouldn't have invented it for us?
We are changing the world.
Love it or hate it, we have all the new ideas and they are turning into actions. Twenty years ago, would you expect gay marriage to be legal? (Side note: it's probably time to start calling it marriage. Just a crazy new idea my millennial brain produced.) Our morals and values are adjusting and expanding, and so is the world.
The world is our oyster. At least, the Internet is.
These days, those two things are pretty much the same. Social media is our territory. There is a Facebook group called "I Love Being A Millennial." Isn't that great? What an entertaining concept! And no, I did not create that page. The Internet is our home and it's where we thrive. Luckily, the Internet is an important part of culture, and we are right on the pulse of it.
We are special.
Well, at least, we all grew up with someone older telling us that we are special. So maybe we have a little extra confidence and a little extra ambition. Perhaps that creates a disillusionment for our future, which sets us up for failure. Perhaps our ambition is our greatest trait.
We care. A lot.
We are often noted for being the most tolerant generation. We care about social justice and equality. We realize the concern regarding the planet. We embrace individuality and find unity in diversity. We aren't perfect, but we sure are opening our minds and making progress.
Now I will be honest, we do have some hateable qualities. For example, the entire Kardashian franchise. But even if you hate it, you still secretly deep, deep down love it just a tiny bit. At least, you love to hate it.
Overall, we aren't much different from the teenagers of any other generation. If you think we are a handful, just wait until the generation below us grows up.
