"America's Got Talent's" 11th season was a wild ride, but on September 14, the show announced its winner: 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal. She is one of my favorite acts, so I can't be more thrilled. However, as with anything, some people don't share my view. I can't help but feel disheartened at seeing negative reactions to Grace winning "America's Got Talent." In my opinion, Grace deserved to win. I love her, and here's why.
She writes her own songs. While I love covers as much as the next person, people who take a risk by singing an original song and nailing it are in a league of their own. The first song I heard by Grace was her audition song, "I Don't Know My Name" a song she wrote about trying to fit in. The song gives me chills, and it affected the judges similarly because Howie Mandel gave her the Golden Buzzer, sending her straight through to the live shows. Grace's songs are not only catchy. The lyrics are heartfelt and meaningful, and she has wisdom beyond her twelve years. People of all ages can relate to her lyrics. For example, her song "Clay", a response to bullying, inspires me to be my best self, regardless of what other people may think. As someone who enjoys creative writing, I really love seeing a young girl hone her songwriting skills. It's great to see how much she loves it.
Her voice is one of a kind. I know some people dislike it, but I think its uniqueness, along with her original songs, sets her apart and gives her an edge above other singers. Keep in mind she is only twelve years old so her voice will mature as she ages. But I think for a 6th grader, she is already very talented.
She can play the ukulele. The instrument combined with her beautiful voice makes for a wonderful performance.
I also love watching her interviews. She's so funny, sweet and such a bright light. Just listening to her talk raises my spirits. I would love to be friends with her. Grace didn't need a sob story to win. She only needed herself. Her humble, beautiful shining self.
Because of these reasons and more, I am a proud supporter of Grace VanderWaal. I am happy for her, and I can't wait for what she does next.
