In a world where self-control, will-power, passion and communication are seriously lacking, it makes sense that most people would think long distance relationships are just ticking time bombs, especially in college ... and even more so when you’re in Greek life.
But if you are one of the few brave souls to take on the challenge that is a long distance relationship, you tell people you’re dating your high school sweetheart who goes to another school or that you’re dating someone in the military. And nearly every time, you are told that “it won’t last” or that “they’re going cheat” or that you’re wasting “valuable college time” or whatever else it may be. But after they ramble, you take it with a grain of salt, because they can’t help that they don’t understand.
The way you feel about this person is worth more to you than losing self-respect on a Friday night, it’s worth more than getting absolutely hammered and making out with a random on a table top and it’s worth more than any meaningless hookup. These relationships are worth staying in to video chat, they are worth the wait and they are worth making sacrifices.
You don’t see the distance as a burden, you don’t see the “single” people around you as temptation and you sure as hell don’t see “better options.” People in long distance relationships make them work because they know they already have the best, and waiting for their significant other is worth more than the world.
Those in long distance relationships understand more than anyone the power of being independent, the trust of being dependent and the passion that comes with dating someone so far away. You are able to take care of yourself, go about your life and grow as an individual, but you are also able to rely on someone to take you that one step further.
No matter what anyone may say to you, no matter how hard times get and no matter how much doubt others have in your relationship, you continue unfazed. Things are so different when you’re in a long distance relationship, because if you didn’t want to be in one, you wouldn't be.
You don’t see temptation. You don’t see options. Why? Because what you have is genuinely blind to everything but what is really important. These relationships, as difficult as they can be, are so important to cherish. Because, unlike the rest of this generation, you are not constantly fooling around with one foot out the door waiting for the next guy to sweep you off your feet.
Why? Because you’ve got everything you could ever want for now, and you truly believe the best is yet to come.
