Happiness is a funny thing sometimes. At least for me, it always seems to come and go without any reason at all. I often feel that I (and I'm sure many others) let the little things set me off into an anger or sadness that puts me in a slump all day. But how cool would life be if we all just took a step back and said, "Today I choose to be happy." Who says we can't?
I'll be incredibly honest: I'm a drama queen. I overreact to everything, and if you've read any of my previous articles, you've probably seen me mention that stress and I are not friends. I'm the master at letting one worrisome thought haunt me day and night until it starts to take a toll on my mood. And if I can be personal with y'all for a second, it's one of the things I hate most about myself. I find myself feeling trapped in my emotions without any way to escape the stress or hurt or sorrow of hitting a bump in the road, big or small. One of the most recent goals I've set for myself is to change that.
If any of you have ever seen the movie "Zombieland," I try to live by rule 32: enjoy the little things. It sounds so silly, but seriously y'all, if you can let the little things get you down, why not let them lift you up instead? If you're anything like me and get frustrated by life's tiny obstacles, it is SO important that you find the things that make you smile, and revel in them. We are a people that thrive on each other's joy, so we have got to take care of ourselves and create that joy for ourselves. No more seeing the negative side of every situation, and no more games of what if. There are so many reasons to be positive, and so many ways to add a little cheer and charm to everything you do.
It really is true that happier people live longer, much more fulfilling lives. Why wouldn't you want a long life that you're so stinking proud to have lived? You know those people who you meet every once in a while that just beam with so much optimism and love in their eyes? I want to be one of those people. I want to be the kind of girl who wakes up every morning with not only happiness in my own heart
, but who brings that gladness to everyone around me. I want to spread love like wildfire with a cheerful, giving heart. But to do that, I first have to be happy with the life I'm living. And if you want that same amazing feeling, we all have to make the decision to choose joy every day. To take the opportunity and enjoy the little things when the negative things are getting us down. Won't you join me in making the world a little brighter for others, and a little happier for ourselves?
