People are always telling me how much I look like my mother. Sure, I guess it is a compliment, but come on, really? She is my MOTHER! Way to make me feel old (no offense mom.) Here are some of the reasons why it gets old…no pun intended.
1. Everyone tells you, like literally EVERYONE. And not even just once, time and time again they tell me. The same people say it multiple times when I see them out on different occasions. Trust me, saying it once will stick forever. When you tell it to me once…haha like I haven’t heard that one before. Saying it twice…okay, maybe you forgot you already told me. Saying it three times…okay, come on seriously? I get it.
2. People say corny things like “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” or “you really are your mother’s daughter.” Really original people, thank you. Is this an insult or a compliment? I’m confused here. And when someone says this to me it’s like I have no choice but to laugh and play along to be polite. This really kills me on the inside. For one thing, I’m not much of a serious person, but I am serious about this: if you say one of these phrases to me, I will respond with a fake laugh or smile. You have been warned.
3. Your siblings laugh at you. With my family, it’s always a joke about who looks more like the Irish side of the family, and who looks more like the Italian side. Now always being told I look more Irish wouldn’t be a bad thing, in fact, it’s not, but it’s just when I’m told what my future is going to look like is where it gets a bit scary.
4. People know you, even when you don’t know them. I was serving a table one night at work when the lady at my table looked at me and said, is your mom a hairstylist per chance? Ding ding ding, there it is. I have literally no idea who this woman is but she knows my face because apparently it’s my mom’s face, not mine.
But in a more optimistic light, here is a reason why all of the things you don’t like being told end up being okay at the end of the day:
5. You love your mom unconditionally. She is the woman who literally gave you life and even though it sucks and sometimes you don’t like her, you owe her a lot. I’m grateful to look up to a woman who is so independent and beautiful, inside and out. She really has shown me what a true woman is and how a woman acts. Yes, she can be crazy and stupid, but serious when she has to. My mom has done so much for me over the years and I’m thankful she is my mom and I was blessed with a cool one (I’ll deny that if I have to). Love you, moms around the world!
XO,
Kellie
