Annoying or not, homework exists at most schools, and very few students find it useful. In fact, most students find it an extremely obnoxious waste of time. What is the point of going home, immediately sitting down to do your homework, and then not finishing until 3 am? Wouldn't it be more beneficial to get a good night's sleep?
I have many teachers that give me homework that requires me to teach myself the material, practice it, and then apply it. Instead of spending class time assigning homework, class time could be spent teaching so that we could learn the material from someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
Now most students would agree that occasional homework is fine, and of course projects and studying for tests has to happen. But when homework starts to take up every single evening and the whole weekend, it gets to be a little much. Teenagers shouldn't spend their whole lives stressing about homework, there are better uses for our time.
Another annoying part about homework is copying. You stay up all night to finish this huge packet that you had to do, and the next day, your "friend" copies all your answers during homeroom, stealing all of your hard work. It's not that easy to just tell them "no, this is my homework, you should have done yours." It sounds like a great idea, but then when the time comes to say that, somehow you end up giving them your answers anyway.
The worst part, however, is when teachers take homework for an accuracy grade! Most teachers will give you credit for the homework if you completed it and showed some amount of effort. However, there's always the teacher who decides to check it for accuracy. They check every question and if the answer isn't right, you get points off. This isn't a test, it's just homework! Why would you take points off for getting it wrong if I completed the assignment?
Forgetting about homework. Have you ever had a teacher who assigns a giant load of homework, and then when it's due he/she just completely ignores it? This is so annoying because you worked so hard to complete all the work that they assigned and then they just don't collect it, grade it or even ask if you did it? What a waste of time. And even worse, the assignment for another class that you didn't do because you were busy doing this one, that one will be collected. And you won't have it.
Healthline.com wrote an article on why too much homework is bad for kids health. "Both the National Education Association (NEA) and the National PTA (NPTA) support a standard of '10 minutes of homework per grade level' and setting a general limit on after-school studying." They went on to explain that studies showed first graders having almost 30 minutes of homework, when the recommended amount is only 10 minutes.According to the "10 minutes per grade rule," high school freshman should have an hour and a half of homework, and juniors just under two hours. Most juniors at my school have far beyond two hours of homework, many nights they could have 5 or 6 hours. This is not only annoying and stressful, it's also proven to be bad for our health! "In 2013, research conducted at Stanford University found that students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance in their lives, and alienation from society."
Even worse, there's the fact that there is absolutely nothing students can do to get less homework, easier homework, or preferably, no homework. A student can't simply explain how long they stayed up doing the work, or why it was a waste of time. You can't just approach your teacher and start listing reasons why he/she shouldn't give you homework. You just have to go home every night and do it.
Teachers seem to have some idea that homework is beneficial and they all seem to give big loads of homework on the same night! They also like to give huge tests on the same day so that the night before is completely miserable for us. Even though there's not much we can do, students need to work together and fight for less homework!
