The other day I was playing intramural volleyball with my sorority and I just felt a rush of excitement and happiness. It felt amazing to be back in the gym and hitting the ball a couple times. I'm a team sport type of person too, so it felt even better to communicate with these ladies on an athletic sport level. It's feelings like these that make me so grateful for intramural sports. I haven't played competitive volleyball in 2 years and even though intramurals isn't the same, competition-wise, as high school or club, it's still such a great and fun feeling to be back out there. It's not just volleyball though. I feel like when I listen to people talk about the sports they play in intramurals there is this great passion and love for it. It's fun whether or not you actually have played the sport before.
I guess that's why I chose to write about this topic for my article this week. So here are some reasons why you should dabble in intramural sports!
1. First things first, it's fun. Nothing really to explain with that ...
2. It's a great way to get in shape and really get into the sport if you don't like working out on a treadmill or elliptical.
3. Following up on that last one, if you really want to be competitive with intramural sports, you have the option of being in a fun and "it's all good league" or "let's kick some a**/no losses" league. Either way they are both great leagues to be in and you'll have fun either way.
4. If you're still living your high school past where you were like the godliest of all jocks (not trying to be rude) you get upset when you don't continue your sport after high school. Intramural sports are a great way to get that godly feeling back. Playing sports can be very liberating for some people, including myself. It feels great to get back on the field or court.
5. It's a great way to get involved with your college! When your mom keeps harping on you about not being involved with the school say you do intramurals and you'll be golden. Maybe ...
Also, it actually looks great on resumes as well. Being involved with your school, even if it is something just as simple as intramural sports.
6. It can take your mind off of a lot of things. If you're feeling stressed, go hard in the 4th quarter. Knock 'em dead!
7. You get to meet some amazing people. People who you probably would have never been friends with, but this sport brought you together; Greeks, non-Greeks, aspiring filmmakers, wannabe business big shots, AS members. Literally everyone.
So seriously do a sport. Try a new one or do one that you've been doing since you could do physical activities. No matter what you'll love it. And remember, have fun.
