8 Reasons Why I'm Excited For The Summer Olympics

The Olympic Games have an undeniable aura surrounding them; the winners become heroes in their home countries, nations all over the world are united through sportsmanship and people become engrossed in athletes' back stories and accomplishments. For a few short weeks, the Olympic Games captivate the world.

Being a former swimmer, the only time swimming really gets international public attention is during the summer Olympics every four years. As a young athlete, I eagerly watched people barely older than I was compete in the Olympics and bring home medals. Some of my first role models were Olympic swimmers. There are people on my swim team who have competed or qualified for Olympic trials, and even though I wasn't one of them, it's incredible to think that someone as normal as myself could be so close to the Olympics. The rigorous and intense training we did at swimming only reinforced my respect for athletes and gave me an appreciation for athletics. It's no wonder I have a huge love for the Olympic Games.

So what am I looking forward to at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio?

1. Michael Phelps is planning to compete.

Even though he announced his retirement after the 2012 London Olympic Games, I was doubtful. It's hard to stay away from the sport of swimming, especially when it's all you've known for your entire life. Sure enough, Phelps returned to the water and began training for the next Olympic Games. I'm definitely interested in seeing how he'll do.

2. The patriotism.

I never feel prouder of my country than I do when I watch the Olympics, and for good reason. It's inspiring to see young athletes from places just like me compete on a world stage.

3. Young talent.

There are bound to be a lot of Olympic newcomers mixed in with the veterans of the past games, and I'm excited to see which new athletes will wow us this year.

4. The opening and closing ceremonies.

These ceremonies are often huge spectacles to behold, showcasing all that the host country has to offer in terms of culture, style, talent and production. I can't wait to see what Rio has in store.

5. The diversity of summer sports.

The Summer Olympics are much more interesting than the Winter Games, in my opinion. The sports vary from team efforts like basketball and soccer to individual endeavors in swimming, track, skeet, gymnastics and others. These sports often interest me much more than the winter games, but to each their own!

6. The appreciation for athletics.

People have a renewed sense of respect for athletes when watching the hard work people put into their training to get to the Olympics. It's certainly admirable.

7. Seeing athletes I've read about compete.

Being a swimmer, I often follow swimming news updates, and I'm eager to see how some of the best swimmers in the U.S. will fare.

8. Seeing history being made.

Some of the most pivotal moments in athletic history occur at the Games, and I can easily recall standout moments from the past few Olympics. I can't wait to see what might make history this year!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
