Just think about onions

Have your ever watched the movie Shrek? Do you recall that moment when Shrek tries to explain to Donkey that “Ogres are like onions”? I was only about six years old when I first watched that movie, and I never understood what Shrek meant when he compared himself to an onion. At first, I thought he must have really like onions for some reason, but after watching the movie again as a young adult, I finally understand what he means.

Many of us have layers added onto us. Now, imagine yourself adding layers upon layers of clothing in order to keep yourself warm, comfortable and protected during the winter. Just the same, the layers that we add onto ourselves help us to stay happy, comfortable and safe.

The core of an onion is the foundation of an onion’s growth. When comparing an onion to a person, we can think of this core as the self--a soul that resists change though time. Some can argue that experiences and relationships to other people are what make up our selves, but I want to believe that I am made up of something that is not the result of someone I may not even know. However, the layers that shield my core are the results of different experiences and people influencing me. Therefore, I do think that I am made up of a self, and over time, that self is hidden by outside influences. As a result, I have had moments where I peeled off a layer, surprising myself because I never knew I was capable of doing something different.

  1. I never knew I could speak loud and clearly in front of people. When I had to present my research at a conference, I had to talk to whoever asked about my research. I was told that I actually did a really good job.
  2. I really love to dance. People do not believe me when I tell them I dance like there's no tomorrow. Usually, people think that I'm boring and “no fun.”
  3. I can be blunt and sassy. Yes, I tend to be quiet and prefer to just listen, but I can speak my mind loud and clearly.
  4. I can be active and lift actual weights. People may look at me and think that I am physically weak, but I am capable of doing lifts, racing and defending myself. I even have experience as a martial artist.
  5. I can be creative. Again, people tend to think that I'm boring and that I'm only good in math or science. but I can write stories, draw animals and sculpt fruits.

I may not be able to define my self, but I do know that it exists. One day, I'm sure I'll be able to stop peeling off and growing new layers and instead just stay at an equilibrium.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
