In high school, everyone tells you, "Just wait, college is going to be the best time of your life." My friends and I were so eager to embark on the crazy, nerve-racking, exciting journey known as college. Moving to a new place, meeting new friends, and making life-long memories while having the times of our lives were all things we couldn't wait for. We are told that during these four years we really change and figure out who we are, what we want in life and are forced into the bittersweet adventure of "adulthood."
However, it is scary to begin this whole new chapter of life without the usual comforts of home we've grown accustomed to. We are away from our normal routine, family, momma's cooking, and our friends. Since the fourth day of freshman year in high school, my best friend and I realized that we were practically soul-mates. Texting each other outfit choices before school, spending every passing period and lunch breaks together, getting in trouble for talking too much in class, running poles together, checking out the boys' butts during baseball games and going to get burritos and cuddling after break-ups. High school can get brutal, but your best friend is someone who is always there to lend a cover stick, tampon, or simply open her refrigerator, and arms for you.
Our paths had been side-by-side for so long that when we decided on different colleges, hence diverting our paths into different directions, it was quite terrifying. You hear the stories that during college you drift apart from your high school friends and only get to see them during summer and winter break, and that you make new life-long best friends during college. While this is true, and I love and appreciate all the friends and beautiful friendships I have in college, still no-one knows me better than my best friend. Even though we are in different states, she is still the first person I call when I am upset, need advice, or simply need someone to give me a little pick-me-up.
Thanks to smartphones, texting, and social media, I feel as if I am living her college experience vicariously through her, and likewise, her through me. That's part of what makes it so thrilling when she comes to visit. She finally gets to meet all these people I have been telling her about, and put a face to their names. Also, the people I have told so much about my best friend to finally get to meet her and understand why I'm so obsessed with her. Whether it is a quick lunch reunion or an entire weekend, I always look forward to and adore our visits. They say true friends will pick up right where they left off no matter how much time has passed, and that is definitel true.
