Why Having An Older Brother Makes Life Better

Let me tell ya 'bout my best friend.

Why Having An Older Brother Makes Life Better
Becca Coventry

Every single day, I think about how grateful I am to have an older brother like mine. He's my best friend, my rock, and my partner in crime. I couldn't imagine my life without him. From the day I was born until now, my favorite memories and life experiences have included my older brother. He's my inspiration, my motivation, and my absolute best friend.

1. He’s my protector.

No matter what goes on in my life, I know my older brother will always have my back. Crappy exes, horrible friends or even a problem I got myself into, I can turn to him. There has never been a day he has not shown me his love for me by trying to help me out or even just being there to listen.

2. Family vacations would not be the same without him.

Don’t get me wrong, mom and dad are a blast… but you help make vacations so memorable. Having your best friend with you all the times at dinners or amusement parks who is also a family member is something I will always be grateful. You’ve been the reason for so many of my laughs and I’ll always remember our countless inside jokes.

3. He’s my role model.

Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted nothing more than to be just like my older brother. I’d even buy the same basketball shoes and shorts as him. To this day, I still look up to everything he does. His advice and shoulder to cry on have gotten me through so many rough points of my life.

4. I sometimes actually maybe kind of appreciate being teased and picked on.

I can hold him accountable for the tough cookie I am today. He’s made me so much stronger by teaching me how to take a joke and have a backbone at the same time, but if anyone else ever tried to take over this role, he was not okay with it!

5. He eventually comes with friends who turn into your second and third older brothers.

They become an exception when it comes to being able to pick on me. They watched me go through every phase of my life as he did, and grow a similar relationship with me and I have others to go to who will also always have my back.

6. He knows how I’m feeling just by looking at me.

I don’t have to say much around him, and I blame sibling telepathy. Vice Versa, I know 500 things on his mind with just one look. At the same time, he also understands how I am feeling all of the time because he usually can feel it himself. When I’m upset or angry, he becomes upset or angry. Bottom line: we hate to see one another anything other than happy.

7. Us against the world.

There are times where I feel as though I have no one to go to or nowhere to turn, but my brother would never let me believe it. No matter who comes and go's in my life, he’ll never turn his back on me. When I’m feeling alone or like I need a friend, I can at least count on my brother to face what life throws at the both of us right by my side.

8. He’s taught me how to be myself.

I have never had to act differently around my brother. I can be myself on my good days as well as my bad days and he always accepts me no matter what. I will forever remember our times as little kids where there was not a care in the world and we could be whoever we wanted to be. He’s the reason I still am a kid at heart today.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
