Why Having An Introverted Best Friend Is Awesome

Why Having An Introverted Best Friend Is Awesome

Maybe I'm a little biased seeing as I am an introverted best friend to a number of people, but I think that having an introverted person in your corner (we love to be in any corner, really) comes in handy. Maybe you have never thought about what the introverted people in your life bring to the table since we rarely speak up or make grand gestures, but the behind the scenes work that we have the potential to do will astound you. While certainly not all-inclusive, here are some reasons why having an introverted best friend is awesome.

We never steal the spotlight.

Seriously, you can have it. We love to make everything all about you and make you feel special not only because we love you, but because putting all eyes on you takes all eye off of us. There is nothing we love more than going unnoticed.

We are awesome at saving you money.

Let's go out and do something fun? Let's NOT. We know plenty of ways to stay in and have a good time. Trust us, we have been doing it our whole lives. Just don't invite too many other people. Just the two of us is really over stimulation enough.

We love to text and write letters.

Call us wimps, but declaring our love or feelings out loud in person is certainly not our thing. But who doesn't love receiving a thoughtful text from their introverted best friend at 2 a.m. when our minds are racing that says, "If I haven't told you lately, I love you and thank you for existing." Or receiving a heartfelt letter on special occasions or just for fun to let you know that we appreciate you sticking around and still inviting us places when we always cancel or including us in that group text that we rarely reply to. From all of us, "Thank you."

We are always lost in thought.

This certainly may annoy you at times, but who else could solve all of life's problems for you? We literally are always thinking and we love to think about things that don't have to do with ourselves. For real, don't tell me that any of you thought that "Dear Abby" was an extrovert.

We make you look really smart.

I cannot even count the number of times that I have known the answer in class or in social situations but have never had the courage to say it out loud. Luckily, I always have a friend next to me to verbalize it. And trust me when I say that we do not want you to give us the credit or call us out. Take it. Take the credit. Be smart, but please be quick about it because the whole class is looking our way and it's making me really uncomfortable.

We are completely comfortable with silence.

Maybe it's just because I am an introvert, but I truly believe that some situations are better with silence. Whether it is grief or simple relaxation on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, I think that silence can speak volumes. So if you need someone to walk through a park in silence with or someone to talk at for an hour or two without any interruption, we seriously are your person. There is nothing we like more than not talking to you for mutual benefit.

We can get you out of any social situation.

As introverts, we have mile long lists of excuses to get out of any plans that you may have. I'm not just talking "I think I'm coming down with the flu" or "My car battery died," but "I have a weird rash and the doctor thinks it might be staph infection, so I probably shouldn't be around people tonight." We are the ultimate manipulators in making it look like it is for the host's benefit that plans are being canceled. Of course, we never use these excuses with you because you're our best friend and you know that when we say "I'm just really tired tonight," it actually means that our introverted brain simply cannot handle whatever social event you invited us to partake in.

We will have your back no matter what.

We know that our social anxiety and awkwardness can often be a burden, but have we ever not been there when it mattered the most? The thing about us introverts is that we come out of our shell, show up and speak up for the ones that we love when we need to. I hope you realize how big of a deal it is for us to do just this when it goes against our entire genetic makeup.

So the next time that we cancel our plans, make a situation awkward by remaining silent, or completely zone out, we do love you, and we always will even if we aren't so open or verbal about it. Just remember to love us back, silence and all. At the end of the day just like we introverts know that we need you to help us shine when we can't do it ourselves, you know that life would be nothing without your introverted best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
