With spring break beginning, it is inevitable to get home and to immediately miss campus, your friends, the social atmosphere, maybe even class (lol who are we kidding). But getting away from campus is incredibly important for many reasons. By getting away, you are able to miss things, and there by know what you really like while there. Also, you are able to recharge and come back more mentally prepared and not constantly run down by thousands of different obligations the university throws at you.
Getting away from campus, even for just a week, really solidifies what you like about campus, or if you even do. You can’t really miss something when it’s three feet in front of you or even a few blocks away. Being away shows you whom you have the strongest bonds with and whom you really care for as you’ll miss them the most. It also will show you who misses you the most. I’m sure there are other ways to find out who your true friends are, but this is a very clear way. After all, distance makes the heart grow fonder.
People are always ready to go back to campus immediately after spring break starts it seems, and Twitter tends to show this. However, maybe it’s because you aren’t away for very long. If your friends could all come home with you, I think it would be possible that we would miss campus less as your friends are definitely a large part of your world there.
Getting off of campus for some time also reminds you of what the real world is actually like, which is often a rude awakening. For those who don’t go on trips, spring break often includes working and not having a social event every night of the week. This can be an important reminder though, as it’ll help keep you focused, even if just slightly more, on your studies as ultimately college’s goal is to help you get a job once you’re out. While often this isn’t what we like when we come home, it’s still a worthwhile aspect of break.
But often one of the most important aspects of break is that by getting away, you are able to mentally recharge. This might seem obvious and redundant, but it’s true. By getting away from campus, you are able to de-stress and come back with a level head. Even if you have no tests during a week on campus, there are likely other obligations you have that make it near impossible to completely relax. Maybe it’s an organization you’re involved in, maybe it’s a part time job you have. But rarely on campus is there a week when you truly can do nothing. Because at the very minimum, you have class to go to, or copy notes for if going to class really isn’t your thing. Being away allows you to recognize all that being on campus really has to offer you. It helps you recognize what you love about campus and why you chose to go to school there in the first place.
