Why Everyone Should Be a Feminist

You don't hate feminism, you just misunderstand it.

Why Everyone Should Be a Feminist

People tend to act like feminism is a foul F word, when it is not. No man or woman should be against feminism. Feminists do not want special privileges over men. Feminist do not hate men. Feminist do not want to be seen as a victim by men. There is really only one key qualification you need to be a feminist: the belief that all people deserve equal rights, no matter their sex.

Four Reasons Everyone Should Be a Feminist.

1. Feminism is a movement towards equality.

Feminists believe in feminism because we want our sons and daughters to be able to dream without limits. Whether they want to be stay-at-home dads/moms when they grow up or be the CEO of a company.

Feminists believe in feminism because we want girls to stop being taught how to not be an "easy target," and instead start teaching how to stop sexually abusing our women and men.

Feminists believe in feminism because we know that both women and men are survivors of both sexual and domestic abuse. And we want to do whatever we can to make those statistics go down, tremendously.

Feminists believe in feminism because we know that it is not fair that young boys are taught to be "tough" and young girls are taught to be "girly".

True feminism is about equality of both sexes, not just women. Most people that think they disagree with feminism don't understand this very point. Feminists do not want more rights than men, or to be treated differently than men. We just simply want the same rights as men, and vice versa.

2. It's a humanity issue, not a gender specific issue.

Feminists believe that women should be treated equally because we are all human, not because we happen to have ovaries.

3. There is still a great need for feminism.

Feminism is not something of the past. Women can vote so that's all there is to it, right? Wrong!

There is still a need for feminism because there is still a pay gap. Women only make 78 cents to every dollar men make. This pay gap exists nation wide, and is worse in some states. Every occupation also has this pay gap. For women of color, the pay gap is even greater. This is why there is still a need for feminism. We have come too far to not keep working towards equality for all.

Feminism is not something of the past, because there are still countries that practice female genital mutilation. Two million girls are at risk for this practice every year (Feminist Majority Foundation). Although the United Nations has made FGM a violation of human rights, many countries that practice Female Genital Mutilation have not yet prohibited this practice. This is why there is still have a need for feminism.

4. You can be a male or female feminist.

Oddly enough, people have the misconception that only females can be feminists. The word feminist does not mean female only. The only "ideal" criteria to be a feminist is the belief in wanting equality for the sexes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
