In 1987, Donald J. Trump wrote a bestselling book named, “The Art of the Deal.” The 41-year-old businessman emphasized two factors he uses for success: “Give them controversy” and “Even bad coverage is still good.” When Trump initially announced his candidacy in June of 2015, he polled ninth place in the Republican Presidential race and political pundits considered his campaign a joke. Turn your clock nine months forward, and now he is on the fast track for the White House.
How did this happen?
The multi-billionaire has made many controversial remarks regarding illegal immigration, people of Muslim faith, and women he has disagreed with. It’s no secret that the man likes to speak whatever is on his mind. Trump can come across as aggressive, narcissistic, informal and bold, but that’s exactly how he wants to present himself. Since his controversial comments, the business mogul has quadrupled his national poll numbers since last summer. When he called for building a larger wall between the United States and Mexico, he made headlines across the globe. Banning all Muslims from entering the nation didn’t go over well with both Republican and Democratic leaders but the new policy position allowed him to dominate social media. Whether news anchors agreed with him or not, Trump was “giving them controversy.” I by no means endorse the businessman myself, but I have learned over the last nine months that he has used the media as a springboard to power. You can hate or love Donald Trump, yet you have probably found yourself talking about him.
What about policy?
Trump’s tax plan cuts taxes for all Americans, wealthy or poor. He believes that everyone deserves to be taxed less, in contrast to Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, who believe taxes should be raised on the upper class. Keeping your own, hard-earned money isn’t a hard concept to stand behind. His tax plan would let people making under $18,000/year pay zero federal income taxes, reducing poverty. Republicans are typically bashed for not supporting the poor, yet both Democratic candidates want to tax people facing poverty more than him. The businessman also calls for modifying the existing law that inhibits the sale of health insurance across state lines. This would provide more competition in the healthcare market, driving premiums and costs down. Donald J. Trump may be hard-headed but at the end of the day, he wants to give average Americans their money back.
Who is actually backing him?
Being a bold, non-career politician, and a wildly successful businessman has propelled Trump to stardom. The Republican establishment has thrown numerous candidates at him and he knocks them down every time. Politicians like to dance around difficult questions while Donald likes to tell you exactly what is on his mind. That’s attractive to many, whether they want to admit it or not. He was the first Republican to get a loud applause from a conservative audience after saying, “The Iraq war was a complete disaster.” He is willing to admit when even his own party has made a mistake. Multiple websites have reported that he may even pick up to 18 percent of the Democratic Party’s voters in November. Many Democrats don’t want to pick between a democratic socialist and women who could be possibly indicted by the FBI. Because of the negative portrayal of him in the media at protests, speeches and debates, many don’t publicly endorse Trump and will remain silent until the election; when it comes down to his policies.
Donald J. Trump is a successful multi-billionaire who knows how to play the media like a fiddle. The more rampageous he is, the more attention he gets, the more his poll numbers will go up. He said so himself in the 1980s. He is willing to leave his 60 million dollar/year salary at the age of 69 to help America get where he thinks we should be. Trump has seen the dirty politics behind the scenes, been called one the world’s best negotiators, preaches a populist message, attracts people from different ideologies, and has been (maybe too) honest when he speaks. Americans have been begging for a man like this since Ronald Reagan. That’s why he will be our next President of The United States of America.
