It's no secret that Donald Trump is not the most morally sound presidential candidate. From borderline incestual comments about his daughter to his mythical wall between the U.S. and Mexico, many laughed at the sheer ridiculousness of his platform. Slowly, however, the joke surrounding Trump has dissipated, giving rise to a terrifying prospect for the country: President Donald Trump.
Though he seems to be crafting his platform out of pieces from Youtube comments sections, Trump has somehow managed to garner massive amounts of support from conservatives, regardless of what it is he actually says.
For the better part of the race, Trump surged forward, utterly destroying the numbers of established politicians and predicted frontrunners like Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz. Only recently has his support faltered with his now-infamous comment regarding the "complete and total shutdown" of Muslim immigration to the U.S.
Donald Trump is not a joke anymore, this much is obvious. His platform is based in hate, intolerance and inequality that flies in the face of everything that the U.S. stands for.
However, the silver lining to Trump's toupee-clad cloud is that he gives everyone else something to unite against. Short of tying people to railroad tracks and twirling his mustache, Trump is the example of how not to be the good guy. Though he holds tight to his group of supporters, liberals, moderates and conservatives alike are recognizing the danger posed by Trump and his policies, taking to social media in an attempt to tear down the walls of his candidacy.
The U.S. is a strong nation when we stand together. We are weak when we allow racism and xenophobia to divide us. cc: @realDonaldTrump
— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) December">https://twitter.com/BernieSanders/status/673989470... 7, 2015Across Twitter and Facebook, support is being pledged to the minority groups attacked by Trump. Islamophobia, in particular, is being pointed out more than ever on social media, and as a search term on Google, it has nearly tripled in popularity since 2005.
Racial inequality and discrimination are two of the hottest topics in the media currently, but despite his best efforts, Trump's radical intolerance has only added fuel to the fire of civil rights and equality. Even during Republican debates, he is often booed and grilled on the many inconsistencies in his platform.
Donald Trump is unhinged. His "policy" proposals are not serious.
— Jeb Bush (@JebBush) December">https://twitter.com/JebBush/status/673990065517891... 7, 2015While Donald Trump has had more success than anyone could have ever imagined, his views have served as a launching point for social movements and a strong base for civil rights arguments. He is nothing short of a bastion for racism and xenophobia and gives everyone else a face for the intolerance that they seek to end.
So although the idea of a Trump White House is nothing short of terrifying, his campaign has given a much-needed push to the causes which he so adamantly opposes. Rather than adopting these fear-mongering ideas, people are taking a stand against them. Donald Trump is making America great again, just not in the way he expected.
