Why Cousins Make The Best Friends

'Cousins are those childhood playmates who grow up to be forever friends.'

I find it weird how some people grow up without being close to their cousins, because I’m lucky enough to be able to call my cousins my best friends. I can count on them for anything that I need and they will always be there for me. And that is why cousins make the best friends.

They were your first friends.

No matter how many friends you have gone through in your lifetime, you will always know that your cousins were there for you from the beginning. From playing with barbie dolls to dancing together at concerts to going through everyone’s high school graduations they will always be your go-to people. Your plans usually involve them.

You can and probably have made plans of your futures together.

I can confidently make plans to do something with my cousins 10 years in the future, because no matter what they will always be there for me. Whether it be making plans of someone’s wedding or planning a dream vacation, you can always count on them to keep their promises.

You keep in touch on a daily basis, whether you live minutes or hours apart.

Especially as you grow older and you and your cousins start going to different colleges and moving to different cities, texting is a major part of your relationship. And FaceTimes are a daily occurrence for you guys. Since some of your cousins might live in different states, when you all finally get together it’s a big celebration. It makes it so much more exciting to see each other after not seeing them for a few months, and when your family does get together it’s usually turns into a party.

You’re super comfortable around them.

Being able to be yourself around other people 100 percent of the time, is the best feeling. Whether it’s not wearing makeup or sending a really ugly selfie, you know they won’t judge you, they’ll just send an uglier selfie back. And since you are so comfortable with each other, your group text messages are extremely entertaining because everyone just says what is on their mind. With that being said, you also feel comfortable telling each other the complete honest truth about a stupid thing they said.

You have a lot of fun memories with them, from as far back as you can remember.

There is no point in being embarrassed around your cousins, because they have seen all the weird things you have done throughout their life. If they weren’t there to see it in person, they saw it on a home video.

They completely understand your dysfunctional family, because they are a part of it.

When you need to vent about your parents or another family member, they will completely understand where your frustration is coming from because they know how crazy your family can get.

When your cousins do live far away, you always have a fun place to visit.

In my family, we have a whole week for all of the cousins to get together in the same place and do fun activities. We call it “Cousins week.” From white water rafting to hiking to the New York State and Massachusetts border to just sitting around the bonfire, there is never a dull moment when we’re together.

Coming from a large family, it is almost impossible to not spend time with your cousins on a normal basis. And even though my family might be crazy, I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
