Change has always been something that I hated. I like things constant and I like routine. The thought of going through a change in my life, no matter how small, makes me feel anxious and nervous. I don’t like the feeling of not knowing what’s going to come next.
For a long time I dreaded coming to college. Moving out and having to meet completely new people would be the biggest change of my life so far and that terrified me. I wasn’t ready at all and I admit that I had trouble adjusting the first few nights. After a few weeks though, I realized that I loved college. It was different than high school for sure, but it was better in a lot of ways.
Now that the year is ending I don’t understand what I was so worried about. This huge change that I was anticipating turned out to be a great change in my life. I’m having a blast in college and have made so many amazing friends.
Going through this huge change in my life made me realize that I should not fear change. Change is not a bad thing. We need to go through changes in our lives in order to improve and grow as people. Change can bring you closer to different people you wouldn’t have met otherwise. Change can bring you adventure if you plan on studying abroad like I do. Change can bring you new opportunities whether it’s an internship or a job. We need to step outside of our comfort zones and embrace change so we can become the best possible versions of ourselves.
So even though it is hard sometimes to let go of what is safe and familiar, it is necessary in order to move on to bigger and better things. If you fear change like I do, don’t let it hold you back. If leaving behind your safe space makes you anxious like me, remember that whatever is coming next might end up changing you for the better.
Next time you are faced with something new, big, and scary, think about all the times that you were nervous or anxious about something and it turned out to be fine in the end. Just like how it was okay all those other times it will be okay this time as well. You never know, maybe whatever is coming next turns out to be the best thing that’s ever happened to you.
So go ahead and jump in feet first and don’t be afraid to face whatever change is coming your way.
