Saturday was National Cat Day and I am currently at college which means I am approximately 169 miles away from my best friend, Sugar. My cat is my best friend, for many reasons:
1. She doesn’t judge me (all the time).
Maybe I haven’t showered in three days or I’m procrastinating writing a paper until the night before, she doesn’t care. I could have just eaten seven servings of my favorite ice cream. Maybe I ran two red lights earlier that day and got a ticket, my mom and dad will throw a fit and ground me, but my cat does not care. As long as I still pet her and give her all my attention, I could kill a man and she would not judge me for it.
2. She knows when I’m sad.
When I have hard day and all I want to do is curl up in bed and cry, my cat will not leave me alone. She gets on top of me and starts “making biscuits” or she will snuggle up with me and bother me until I’m not sad anymore. And if I happen to be crying she will meow over and over again or find part of my body that isn’t covered by blankets and love-bite me. It hurts a lot, but it hurts a little less knowing that she cares.
3. She listens to all my problems and won’t complain.
If I have a bad day and people are getting on my last nerve, I will lock myself in my room and rant to my cat. I will start from the beginning of the day when I woke up 20 minutes late and tell her every bad thing that happened to me. And she just sits there and listens, and it helps so much. She will also listen if I’m having the best day ever or I just want to talk or I have a big speech coming up and I need to practice and no one else is around. She’s not the best at giving advice but she sure is a great listener.
4. She can cheer me up on a bad day.
Being 169 miles away from the love of my life can be very hard sometimes. There’re times where I don’t think that I can survive another day without seeing her and holding her and giving her all my love. But, technology is amazing and I will be forever grateful for it because my mom can send me Snapchats of her and I can FaceTime with her. I will make it through this year and then I can move off campus and bring my best friend here.
5. She always wants to be with me.
Last year I was on newspaper staff at my high school and I would constantly be on the computer, writing articles and editing papers, and there she would be, in my lap, making it really hard to focus. I would be taking a shower or a bath and she would be on the edge of the tub or going in between the shower curtains. She never leaves me alone, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.
6. She loves me and I love her.
My biggest fear about leaving for college was that I would come home for breaks or on weekends and she wouldn’t remember me or she wouldn’t love me as much as she did before I moved out. Alas, whenever I go home, we pick right back up where we left off and it’s like I never left.
I love my cat and I can’t imagine life without her. I can’t wait for her to move here next year so when I’m writing next year’s article on National Cat Day, she can be right here with me, as I write about how great it is to have your best friend at college with you. After writing this article about my best friend, I’m missing her a lot more now. I can’t really drive home right now, but I can drive to the humane society and go cuddle with some cats to make me feel better.
