I remember the flood of Fitbits when they swarmed into my life. I remember the commercial that showed people doing all these crazy activities with that cool little song, you know the: "Daddy fit, Mommy fit, Early fit, find your fit, etc." At the time, all I could think about was the fact that these things probably weren't cheap, and now there would a new thing that people with more money than me could flaunt in my face as I watched them take the unnecessarily long route to their classes or check the time.
I also thought back to the good old days when everyone was obsessed with the pedometers that McDonald's was giving out, and suddenly everyone wanted to start walking and running. My mom had one and my sister and I would shake the crap out of it and then go run and tell someone how many steps we had taken. So now, here another advance in technology was here that would cause lazy people to want to get up in move. I got the idea of it and it was a good idea, but again, just why?
I guess I didn't understand why a $200 watch that counted your steps would make people suddenly be so into fitness and health. Then something bizarre happened. I was offered a spot to workout with a friend-- a friend who does not wear a Fitbit, by the way. Anyway, suddenly I was running and working out in the gym at least one or two times a week. And another thing happened, I discovered these little things measure your sleep!
It measures your sleep! I found out that they can tell you the total hours you slept including the time you laid down on your bed or futon, to the time you enter sleep, to the time you rise and shine. More than anything I wanted to know my sleep pattern, because I was one of those people who laid down and calculated the hours, minuntes, and seconds of sleep that I would get once I closed my eyes.
I had to get one!
I was now working out and I was interested, so I was in the perfect position to get one of these things. But, I realized I was poor, and the actual wristband trackers could range from $70-$150. That was code for, no Fitbit for you, friend.
So, with the help of Groupon, I found a wristband activity tracker made by a different company, called Waloo, that seemed to be just as good as the Fitbit. The regular price was only $49.99 I got from Groupon for only $20! Either was, it was a much better deal.
I vowed that the purpose of it was to measure my sleep and monitor my workouts, but I have now become that person who takes the stairs all the time and I feel a disappointment when I don't reach my daily goal of steps. I have become obsessed with my generic Fitbit.
So, Fitbit users, I won't lie when I tell you that I used to judge you. I used to think that you couldn't be that in tune with fitness if you were only in it for the steps, but now I am you. I am understanding the need of the Fitbit and activity trackers. To me, it's a way to avoid a sedentary lifestyle, because just as yours does, mine sends me an alarm if I've been sitting too long. I have become just like you, or almost like you, with my generic Fitbit. My Waloo Runlax.
