Why Body Image Issues are a Big Issue

We have all read the catchy cliché sayings in the glossy pages of magazines telling us to “love yourself" and “make peace with your body." But that is easier said than done, especially when you turn the page and see a five-foot-ten glamazon whose few existing flaws were airbrushed and photoshopped to become all but nonexistent. Envy and unrealistic goals are definitely a step in the wrong direction on the road to “body peace."

While millions of women of all ages and walks of life are subjected to this hypocrisy, usually it is the high school and college girls who are hit the hardest. The thing that no one tells you in sophomore-year health class is that your body changes, a lot. They don't tell you that squeezing into your bat mitzvah dress at the age of eighteen will be all but impossible and that your thighs will not always look like popsicle sticks, unless you have Gisele Bundchen's supernatural powers.

The real question is: why is body image such a big problem now? There have always been women who are the image of perfection and the source of envy, but why is it now having such a strong effect on young women and even driving them to extremes, all to reach a nearly unattainable goal? In reality, women's bodies haven't changed; the change is social media.

Magazines that preach about “making peace with your body" don't stand a chance against the countless Instagram accounts that flaunt waifish models prancing around on tropical beaches in scanty designer bikinis. As if normal people can pull that off. Not to mention the fully advertised model friend-cults, in which you have to be a select breed of perfection to become friends with other perfect and wildly famous young models.

Instead of listening to pop culture telling us to “love ourselves" and “make peace with our bodies," we should tune it all out and make peace with reality. In reality, women do not look like Barbie dolls and fashion sketches. Despite everything that television, magazines, Facebook, and Instagram would suggest, looking like that is not the norm.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
