All across the country multiple sororities celebrate the rush week. Thousands of girls from California to New York actually put on a full face of makeup (for multiple days in a row), dress to impress, and put on their biggest smile. While it may seem ridiculous to some, these girls are preparing for what could possibly be the best day of their life up to this point.
Recruitment is made up of multiple themed days. At my university, it goes as follows: welcome day, philanthropy round, and preference night. Each day initiated members of each sorority are matched with potential new members. After matching is done, it gets a little intense. For a pretty decent amount of time, you basically have to chat up a storm with a complete stranger. You have to tell them literally everything there is to know about your Greek organization. Of course, it’s incredibly overwhelming and stressful. You’re on your feet in heels for hours on end. By the time the night is over your feet hurt so bad you want to cut them off. Even though it sounds miserable, it’s actually a lot of fun spending time with every single one of your sisters.
While recruitment is actually taking it place it feels like the most exciting day, bid day, is never going to come. Every active member has butterflies in their stomach the morning that bids are to be handed out. The evening is full of anticipation as members of each sorority wait excitedly for their new members to run out and embrace them in huge hugs. Chants are being cheered from the top of every girl's lungs and screams echo from all the new girls that have finally found their home away from home.
Bid day continues for hours after bids are actually handed out. Sororities across the nation go to their city’s lake or to the sorority house and basically celebrate all night. It’s so much fun being able to add people to a group of girls that you’ve grown to love.
Having a new group of girls added to your sisterhood is the greatest feeling. So many memories are going to be shared. Multiple tears are going to be shed. But the thing about having 60 sisters is that there is always someone to share every moment with, no matter if it’s good or bad. Bid day is the absolute best day because you can finally welcome girls into a lifelong friendship.
