It's that time of year again--red and pink paper hearts adorn windows and hallways, the grocery store's front aisles are packed with teddy bears, candy boxes, and flowers, and the world's worst candy (conversation hearts) is back. Yes, Valentine's Day is upon us again!
Every year, we divide among ourselves: there are the pro-Valentiners and the anti-Valentiners. On the one hand, you hear all of the Valentine-lovers gushing about how February 14th is an excuse to show your love, while the Valentine-haters gripe about how love should be shown every day, and clearly Valentine's Day is just some kind of corporate conspiracy to get us to buy cards at ridiculously inflated prices.
If you're me, you're just excited about all the chocolate that's going to go on sale on Monday.
More than any other conversation we hear on Valentine's Day, we hear complaints of "I don't have a Valentine," or "#ForeverAlone."
In my opinion, this is the worst part about Valentine's Day. In today's society, when it comes to Valentine's Day, people seem so hung up on the idea of having a Valentine. It's almost like if you don't have a Valentine, you have no business doing anything on February 14th except staying at home crying.
This is not the case, and I'm here to tell you why with a ground-breaking, innovative, and altogether scandalous revelation:
YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN VALENTINE!
Take a moment to pick your jaws up off the floor.
Being your own valentine is actually the best because it requires almost no effort on your part. You already know what you like the best, so the stress of trying to find the perfect gift is eliminated. You can wear whatever you want, because you don't have to worry about impressing that "special someone" because you are that special someone. Perhaps best of all is you get to pick what you want to do. You want to stay in and sleep all day? Go for it! You want to get dressed up and take yourself out to dinner? That sounds perfect!
The bottom line is, instead of worrying about not having a Valentine, we need to embrace just how awesome it is to be your own Valentine. Self love is important, friends.
So if you, like me, are celebrating solo this year, do yourself a favor, and this Valentine's Day, don't let yourself get caught up in the idea that you absolutely need someone special in your life. The reality is, you do have someone special of your life--and it's you!
