South Carolina has an extensive history in the political arena. Although some may look at the state in disbelief seeing that the majority of the state seems to be rural, South Carolina is rich in politics. Attending college in this state during the primary season is probably the best decision you can make if you are interested in the pandemonium we call American politics.
- Months upon months prior to the South Carolina general election, politicians swarm the state in hopes of gaining popularity and winning over the coveted South.
- If you are active in attending events, you will probably meet at least one candidate. I was lucky to meet two; Senator Ted Cruz (several occasions) and Senator Marco Rubio (once when he visited my university).
- Doors of opportunities open for those who look. Internships are a big deal, and many campaign headquarters and political action committees look for students to act as a liaison between the college and the campaign.
- You could make it on national news! True fact: my face was featured on the Today Show during a segment about Trump and Cruz. I have the screenshot to prove it.
- Big name political celebrities come to join in the chaos that we call the South Carolina primary. I have met Glenn Beck and Phil Robertson, and have seen Sean Hannity and important political figures like Senator Mike Lee and former Governor Rick Perry.
- Attending events and becoming involved helps you to network. I have met many amazing people just through volunteering who can recommend me for internships and possible work.
- You become passionate in what your believe in. The more you attend events and hear speakers who voice and address your concerns, the more you become consumed with excitement and ready to further their efforts.
