Do you ever get that feeling that you need to do something crazy and spontaneous? You’re so stuck in your daily routine that you just want to do absolutely anything to add excitement to your life? Since returning from the Disney College Program, I have been stuck in a rut. Going from a life that is moving at a hundred miles per hour and you’re trying to catch up and the world feels like it’s spinning then going to a normal life that you’ve lived for the other 18 years of your existence is quite the change. Everyday was a new adventure. From waking up early and finding a new path to run to going to Magic Kingdom after work and finding a peaceful place behind Dumbos’s circus, my life was exciting and ever changing. Now here I am back at home and surrounded by cornfields and cows instead of palm trees and Cinderella’s castle, and I am struggling. However, it’s the feeling of needing a change that brings out the hunger and desire for something more for people. As I reminisced my time in Florida as I went through my memory box, I came across a letter that my friend wrote to me before I left and in this letter contained a quote from one of my favorite TV shows that resonates with me now more than ever. In the words of Dr. Gregory House (who I will probably quote again because I’m obsessed with that show) ,“People say time changes things, but it’s not true. Doing things changes things. Not doing things leaves things exactly as they were”. Over time we expect to change, friends come and go, we grow older, we meet new people, and we have new experiences. However, one needs to be more proactive in wanting change rather than just expecting the fleeting moments of time to do all the work. As humans, we can be lazy and we like to stay in our comfort zone. Sometimes we get this burning desire for change, and when we do we need to run with it. We need to take this feeling and turn it into something and just do it. Sometimes you just gotta give it all to God and do something that makes your heart beat so fast you feel like its going to bust out of your chest.
As 2018 is quickly approaching, I encourage you to make some changes in your life. Everyone always says "New year, new me," make it happen this year. Growth happens when we get out of our comfort zone. It's really important to note that even if your life is going great and you have everything you can ask for, you can always benefit from change. Change doesn't have to be quitting your job, cutting off your friends, going vegan, and dying your hair. It can be ordering a different coffee than usual, talking to a coworker you've never really talked to, or just finally signing up for that 5K you've always wanted to do. Sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone to find yourself and newfound happiness. I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Karen Salmansohn that always reminds me how important changing and evolving is, "What if I told you 10 years from now your life would be exactly the same? Doubt you'd be happy. So, why are you so afraid of change?"
