The Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro have been nothing but a disaster. From the location being a crime hub to the lack of televising parts of events, I personally am not satisfied.
To start, the location itself was not the best idea. Rio is not safe. There were concerns right before the Olympics began about health and safety that should have been considered when the location was originally decided. When the Olympians were placed in the Olympic village to live for the two weeks their apartments were dirty and not many things were in working condition. This poses the question of whether this living condition was safe for the athlete’s health. There were also concerns of the Zika virus, which is detrimental to not only the athletes but tourists as well.
Also, Rio has an obscene amount of violence. Police are killing people, the people are killing each other and the death rate is rising quickly as a result. The police never planned on protecting those visiting Rio for the Olympics, when in reality they should have been ready to be stronger and more protective. If no one is going to be safe, then why is Rio a good location? The Olympics have always been a close-to-civil gathering of over 200 nations and having a lack of safety ruins all the fun. If something occurred related to terrorism, are the police there to protect everyone even though they made it clear that they were not going to protect the tourists? People visiting Rio are not safe, and we should all be thankful that no one has gotten injured.
Last, I truly wish that everything was televised differently. Sports like gymnastics were not televised well, seeing as how they only showed Americans during primetime for the first few days so we could not see the competition. Other sports were not televised at all, and if they were, they were not recapped during primetime, so many Americans did not get to see some sports. Field hockey, handball and countless others should have been televised. The athletes work just as hard as those shown in primetime, and everybody deserves their turn in the spotlight.
Overall, Rio was not a great decision for the Olympic Committee. I’m biased, but Chicago would have been better. Anyway, people are not safe, the athletes are not safe and the people at home watching are not happy with the Olympics. No one is that happy with Rio, and I am included. Besides the fantastic athletes, Rio has not been that great. Let’s hope for Tokyo 2020 to be better.
