Why I Am In A Sorority

"Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket, instead pin it over your heart."

Why I Am In A Sorority

This is the time for recruitment at many schools. Luckily, I don't have to memorize the words to songs or where to stand for another semester, but I thought I would share why I am in a sorority.

First of, greek life is in my family. My mom was an Alpha Chi at her university so I grew up hearing the songs and how much she enjoyed it while she was in college. Even nowadays, there are so many movies and tv shows about sororities that it is all in the media. It is pretty hard to escape. I knew growing up that I wanted to be in a sorority, but I really didn't know what that meant. Looking back to last year this time, I don't think that I really even knew the answer to that question. Now that I am in a sorority, I could not imagine my life without it.

One of the reasons I love Kappa so much is because of our sisterhood. I currently live with ten girls in one room (crazy right?) but I truly would not be happy living in any other room. I know that I can walk into my closet and borrow anything I see. All of the girls I live with know almost anything about me and I know I could truly trust them with my life. Beyond my roommates, I love all of my other sisters. They all joined Kappa for reasons similar to my own. We share a special bond that no one understands unless you are in a house. I don't know what I would do without my sisters, they are always there for me no matter the circumstance and that is something I wouldn't trade for the world.

Another reason is because of Kappa itself. The traditions and everything we do as a house is so special. I can't really explain in detail what it is all about but if you are in a house you know what I am talking about. The traditions we do that no one else knows about are so sacred within our house walls. No one besides my sisters and kappas all over knows what happens during our ceremonies. It makes me feel special that I am bonded to my sisters in another way than just being their "sister". These traditions have also been around for many years. I think back to the Kappas who were in my place going through the same ceremonies. I feel so lucky to be apart of a tradition that has been for many years and cannot wait to continue on the beautiful ceremonies that kappa has.

Finally, I love Kappa because of what we stand for. We are a group of very different girls but all come together for this same reason and that is Kappa. Kappa's motto is, aspire to be. I keep this in mind all the time because I want to aspire to be the best I can be. I know Kappas all over want to always present the best of themselves and even if they are having an off day, they can count on their sisters. We represent the owl, golden key and fleur de lis in everything that we do. Kappa can stand for many things, depending on the person but to me, Kappa is love. We are a group of girls who love each other unconditionally and that is something that I cherish.

At the end of the day, I (obviously) love Kappa. Regardless if something is wrong or I am fighting with one of my sisters, I know it will be okay because of Kappa. I am so grateful for having this opportunity to represent Kappa and I feel so lucky to be a part of something that makes me feel so special.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
