Why It's OK To Hate Your Major

College is hard and that’s OK. No one said that college was going to be easy or even fun. You’re setting the course for the rest of your life and that is a big deal. I love my major most of the time and what I’m going to be doing when I leave here is going to be the best thing for me but, there are times when I absolutely HATE my major.

  • You’ve had a bad day, week, month or even a bad semester. It’s OK to have problems occasionally. The trick to it is not letting it define you for the rest of your college career. If life knocks you down just smile and get back up again, it won’t always be bad. Someday you will look back and laugh about how your problems seemed like the end of the world at the time.
  • You can’t seem to understand some of the classes. Believe me, we have all been there and will probably be there again before we graduate. I couldn’t stand my mass communications class, it didn’t make sense to me and I couldn’t muster up the energy to be interested in what was going on. My advice to you is to grin and bear it . You have to take this class to get into the stuff that you are really interested in. Walk into it with an open mind and don’t immediately judge the class because the first few weeks are bad.
  • You suddenly don’t feel like you know what you want to do. I have been there. Oh believe me, I have been there. I was a science major and found out that I do not like science so I changed to Communications (Public Relations and Event Management). Sometimes when I am in class, I still think what if I don’t want to be a wedding planner but, I want to be a writer, book shop owner or even a publisher? It’s OK to have second thoughts on your major, we all have done that. It is a big decision to make that will affect your whole life. Don’t worry you can always change or work harder outside of school to prepare for that interview with that big girl/boy dream job.
  • Jobs seem to be slim pickins’. Well, let me tell ya', jobs are slim everywhere except maybe the nursing field. If you prepare and plan for the dream job you want you will find one. It might not be in your home state or even in the same country but, you will find one. If you want a job bad enough you will be willing to go where the jobs are. You are a recent graduate with a degree in something amazing and you have the skills needed, all you have to do is believe in yourself and work hard.
  • You don’t know who you are anymore. College changes you. The experiences, the school and everything you come into contact with will alter who you are as a person. That is okay, I promise. You will change, just be prepared for it, it’s called becoming a fully functional adult. Be prepared because everyone out there is having the same problems you are. College is more than just school it’s about growing and becoming your own person modeled after those who raised you.

Just remember, when you have second thoughts about your college major that there is a reason why you chose it. Never forget that you wanted to be a Nurse, Lawyer, Businessman, Ag or Communications executive for SOME reason. If it takes a few days to realize why this major is for you that’s OK. Love who you are and what you want to be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
