A friend of mine recently mentioned this phrase: Be where your feet are. At first, you think well duh where else would I be? Then it hits you. That aching question... what does it mean to truly be exactly where my feet are? To dwell exactly in this space of time. Not worried for tomorrow or dreaming of yesterday. Not wondering what life will be next month or in five years. Not wondering where you will be or who you will be. Not even worrying about who you will be with. To truly be. Just exactly as you are. In this exact space and time, at this exact place, with these exact people.
You see, life is full of what ifs...
What if I move here. What if I take this position. What if I end up with this person. What if I leave these people. What if I don't like where I end up. You can fill a life with a mouth full of what-ifs. Frankly, the only one who truly knows the answer to these questions simply isn't you...
I know... you're shook, right? Sorry, but the one who knows the answer to all of these is the one who wrote every page before you even opened the book. Luckily, that same one is the one who placed you exactly where you are right now. That one is the one who will still be there when you get to that place you're dreaming of. When you make that move, or take that position, or find that person. Call it faith or blind optimism, but I also think He is waiting for you to just be. Because as fantastic as the plans He has for you are, He also planned out this very day you're living right now. He took the time to place you with these people. He took the time to send you to this school, or city, or state. And maybe just maybe you could be kind enough to enjoy it. Now, don't get me wrong, I live for a plan and a bit of structure, but my friends there is so much beauty in the now. There is beauty in this season. There is beauty in the security of your loved ones. There is beauty in the relationships you've fostered. There's beauty in the steps you've taken. There's beauty in you. Yep. You. The person that you are right now just trying to make it. So my friend, please stop wishing that beauty away.
Whatever season of life you're in right now. As you graduate. As you job, home, or city hunt. As you start a family or prepare to move away from yours. Give it your all. Be here. Right now. Fully, madly, deeply. Give yourself to what and who you love. No matter how scary. Don't pull away in preparation, but draw near in earnestness. Let people love you and love them fiercely back. Engulf yourself in your current passion. Keep a hopeful eye on the future but an active zeal on today. Let this season, this day, this moment have all of you. Be where your feet are. Look down. You see em? Now put them to work. Be exactly where you are right now. In a lecture hall, behind a laptop, maybe in a comfy bed. Commit. Go all in. Honor the one who took the time to give you this day and do it big. Live for who you are, and where you are, and who and what you have now. Tomorrow isn't promised. That job. That city. That fairytale. We can't see it. We don't have the blueprint. Truly the only control we have over it is fully committing to every moment in between and having faith for the rest. Don't let that scare you. Let that free you. Let it propel you into today. Let it spread love to those around you. Let it focus your energies on the task at hand. Live in this season and don't wish it away because you're too busy planning for the next one. Who knows? Maybe committing to this time that seems mundane will prepare you for that dream come true. I guess the only way to find out is to be... right here... right now... exactly where your feet are.
