They say that in college, you find some of your best life-long friends. You know, the friends that are the same type of weird as you. The friends who ad lib songs with you in the car. The friends you can call at one in the morning crying and even though they’re half asleep, they’ll still know exactly what to say.
And sometimes these friends study abroad. So here’s what to expect when your bestfriend studies abroad for a semester (or two):
1. It’ll feel like the end of the world.
When they leave, you’ll be faced with the harsh reality of the situation. This is your right hand, your go to. Not only are you missing your study buddy, the person who you know will always keep you accountable, but you’re also missing your facemask and wine night buddy, who binge watches Scandal with you.
2. You will constantly be reminded that they’re not just five minutes away anymore.
You’re long past having to ask “Where are you?” because you have indefinite access to their location on Find My Friends. Except that now when you check their location, you realize just how far away they are.
3. You will be disappointed sometimes
You might try to do some of the same things you’d normally do with your best friend with other friends, but it just won’t be the same. You might even get discouraged, but hopefully you’ll remember how important it is to step out of your comfort zone and make new memories with the people around you.
4. You'll drop everything for that random FaceTime call.
Two words: time zones. They’ll be the end of you, or so you think. In all reality, when you do get that random phone call your heart will race and you might even scream out of excitement. There’s nothing like hearing your best friend’s voice and catching up.
5. You talk about your best friend every chance you get.
Everything reminds you of your best friend and because you’re lonely, you’ll share pretty much all of your stories with other friends (and honestly anyone else who will listen) to the point where they know your best friend really well without even having met said friend.
6. You’ll develop a new appreciation for your best friend.
It’s almost like a long distance relationship. And because you’ve become so close after the last couple of years, it’s likely that this person is tightly woven into your daily life. You might not talk as frequently, but when you do it feels as if no time has passed. Truth be told, if you’ve made it this far your friendship is damn near invincible. You won’t always be in the same city, state or even country as your best friend depending on where life takes each of you. But if you can make it through the one or two semesters apart, you’ll rest assured that this person will forever be a part of life.
