When You Go To College

Don't forget to....

When You Go To College

You go to college and it is almost like you forget all the things you have been taught to do your entire life. All of those things that your parents so graciously instilled in all of your areas of life, it is almost like they all just flow completely out of your brain. Then, one day you start to remember and realize why everyone taught you those things.

1. Take care of yourself.

They tell you this not so you look skinny or perfect in the eyes of the world, but so you feel good. When you aren't taking care of your body psychically you are also not taking care of your body emotionally or mentally. Yes, it is so easy to grab Chick-Fil-A rather than go out of your way to get food from the cafeteria or maybe even buy your own food and cook it. The issue is... you need to.

2. Go to church.

Maybe you didn't grow up in church so this doesn't apply to you, but for those of us who did there is a reason you need to continue to go. When you attend church those people become your people. They become your family because your biological family isn't there while you're in college. You need people with the same beliefs as you because the simple fact is they understand you better and they will be able to guide you much better than someone else would be able to.

3. Rest.

Right, no time for that. Make time. You have to give your body and your mind time to just rest and start over. It's just like needing to take care of yourself, the less rest you get the more you will not be able to do because your body simply won't be able to function.

4. Do things before they are due.

In high school, those assignments could be done in one night, but it is not like that in college. You need to do things way before they are due because that teacher will just give you more to do along with your other five, six, maybe even 7 teachers. There's no such thing as your computer breaking or you will turn it in next period. Yes, your teachers in college care but they also have 130-1,500 other students who they need to care about as well.

5. Go to class.

Your attendance may not be mandatory, but I can tell you this right now no one was lying when they said you will do better if you go to class. There are some days that you will absolutely, with no doubt need to skip, but you need to save those days for when you really and truly need them. Also, when you go to class you will be able to get to know your teachers and they might be more willing to help you when a day comes up and you absolutely have no choice but to miss.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
